I can't find any suitable line to Schandorff's proposed refutations of the Botvinnik.  Sad

So what's Schandorff's refutation?

You see, having played both, I tend to be as skeptical
about refutations of the Botvinnik as of the Dragon.

A little off-topic:

Do these Semi-Slav books cover the Cambridge Springs (D52) lines?  They are so much a part of the Semi-Slav player's repertoire that I thought some books would cover it.  Wells' book, The Complete Semi-Slav (1994) does not.

Btw:  I found much of Vigorito's line in Wells' old book with Wells suggesting that 15.Qf3 is not terribly dangerous to Black.  Back in 1994, there weren't too many examples for Wells to draw from though.

I must have panicked initially, because although it looks hard to face OTB with no prep / memory, once the engines are in place black looks OK.

Problems seems that a sideline could be so dangerous OTB (Black moves seem more difficult to find to me than white's, but may be I am mistaken ... again)

I did mention that Vigorito book did not provide answers in the main line Botvinnink, but he got upset....

Funny that recently I thought it was perhaps woth checking (the lines he proposed). In the end I am with Bo Hansen: some lines are unsuitable to play below a certain level (like 2550, for example). I, for one, have no idea what is going on in the main line Botvinnik...

So it seems that Smeets played suboptimally according Vigorito, whose analysis supporting Black's chances remains unchallenged.

I don't own a copy of this book, but my instincts tell me Markovich is correct. Of course, any book will have either flaws or lines that are obsolete within 6 months of publication but this should not discourage wise buyers who will look at the lines critically and compare the book lines to current practice.

Here's another Play the Semi-Slav problem - Schandorff's book! I really want the Botvinnik to be completely playable, but it seems that Schandorff's book completely crushes the ...Qa6 line proposed by Vigorito, as well as the normal ...Qb5 tries. What to do? Does anyone actually still play the Botvinnik and have something up their sleeve? I think Smeet's played it against Van Wely a while back, who tends to be quite prepared, so I'm wondering what he had in mind if Van Wely marched down the critical lines instead of what he played.

Markovich,

You and I are thinking along the same lines tactically, and I agree that Black seems ok.  I'd like to see how Koneru won.

What happens after the obvious 20...Qc3?

I looked at it and Black seems safe enough after 21.axb3 Kb8.  I'm not sure what White has then besides 22.Bf4 Ka7 23.Bxe5 Qxe5 24.Qe3+ Kb8 25.Nxd8 Rxd8 26.f3, which looks pretty even to me.

White could also try 21.Nxd8 Kd8 22.bxc3, but then 22...Qc8 appears to be pretty good for Black.

white improves with 20.Ne6 and it is all very difficult.

Difficult?  It's a bloody mess!  I have no idea what's going on in the resulting position.  Thanks for a fascinating problem to work on this weekend!

Cheers!
