Interesting to see that the variation with 9 ...Nb4 10. Nd4 Bc5 11. a3 analyzed. The move 11. ...Nd3+!? is not mentioned at all by Marin, but I agree, it doesn't look fully convincing for Black anyway.

With this as the starting position, I have been simply unable to find anything positive for white after 5.Qxd4 Na6!?, but rather find black just equalizing very quickly. Does anyone have any positive suggestions? Is the best white has just to play 6.Nf3 Bc5 7.Qe5+ Qe7 8. Qxe7+ Bxe7?

Should white look towards 3.Nc3 instead, even though ...Bb4 then seems to equalize comfortably?

For move order reasons I'm looking more towards 1.c4 against other moves, but I'm finding zero in the King's English 4 Knights, and the g3 systems.  Cry It's almost looking like I'll have to stick with 1.Nf3 and deal with 1.Nf3 2.c4 d4, or tons of theory after 2.d4 intending 3.c4.

I haven't checked the old thread to see if there is anything relevant compared to recent practice but this variation came up years ago here:  http://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/chess/YaBB.pl?num=1074196922/33

Sorry for asking, but I am not sure how Black equalizes quickly in this variation. After 9. Nc3, 9 ...d5 doesn't seem to work for Black, and if this is the case, two other moves are 9 ...d6 and 9 ...Nb4, both analyzed by Marin (as is 9 ...d5). I guess natural is 9 ...0-0, which should transpose to 9 ...d6, right? After all these alternatives, White should have some pressure against the d6-pawn, or is there something simpler for Black?

I wonder what "quite promising for White" means.  After all, 4. e4 has been around for a very long time, and has generally (well, probably always) been considered as leading to equality (/unclarity/compensation) with best play.

I actually played that line back when I was ~1200 USCF or so (1000 points ago). It's just equal after ...Bb4, but there is still plenty of room for chess/outplaying an unwary opponent.

No good as a constant weapon though...

I would recommend playing 2.Nc3 over 2.g3 for the reasons that you give in your post. Objectively 2.Nc3 is more testing than 2.g3 because the ...c6 options are not as effective after 2.Nc3.

You should consider Kosten's recommendation in 'Dangerous Weapons: Flank Openings': 1.c4 e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.Nf3 Nc6 4.e4!? which seems quite promising for White. If 2...Nc6, you can consider playing 3.g3 instead as a way of reaching the positions with a kingside fianchetto that you like, or just play 3.Nf3, which will usually transpose after 3...Nf6 4.e4.

Alternatively, 4.e3 also offers White some chances of an edge, although current theory states that Black should equalise.

All our dreams come true if we have the courage to pursue them.
