According to analysis on Johansson's site - see above - White has full compensation after 8...Kc6. Moreover I was arguing why I find this line quite unattractive for White, so the "but" is misplaced.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

But black isn't forced to draw, he can play on for a full point with 8...Kc6.

Black might be slightly better, but he has to tread very dangerous waters until he secures a definite edge.

It's an instant draw:  7.Bxf7+ Kd7 8.Be6+ Ke8! and White has nothing better than 9.Bf7+ Kd7 9.Be6+ Ke8 etcetera. In other words, 5...Bg4! is much safer than 5...e6!?
This has been pointed out half a dozen times in the past on this site and is also to be found on Thomas Johansson's site. Typically Urusov does not mention it. I am too lazy to wade through MacKenzie's site to find out what he has to say.
In the end the whole idea is only fit for blitz, unless you'r satisfied with an early draw of course.

Obviously this just gives black instant equality. Although, if you're interested in this line I imagine you won't care Smiley.

Besides Bryntse (mentioned above), ChessLectures.com instructor Dana Mackenzie has played, written about, and spoken about the line.  I cite some of his work in a piece called "The Nuclear Option in the Sicilian Grand Prix."
http://www.kenilworthchessclub.org/kenilworthian/2006/10/nuclear-option-in-sicil...
I point interested readers to his excellent ChessLecture.com video and Chess Life article (October 20, 2006) about the line 1.e4 c5 2.f4 d5 3.Nf3 dxe4 4.Ng5 Nf6 5.Bc4 Bg4?! (safer 5...e6) 6.Qxg4! Nxg4 7.Bxf7+ Kd7 8.Be6+ Kc6 9.Bxg4 -- sacrificing the Queen for two pieces and the initiative -- which he used to beat IM David Pruess.

He has since offered more discussion of his games with the line at his blog: http://www.danamackenzie.com/blog/

Hector has been a GM for many many years and is well known (at least in Sweden) for hes excentric openings.

Here's something that Thomas Johansson, a.k.a. Taljechin, put on the web some time ago.

Hector is famous for playing a reversed Budapest in other contexts too, eg

1e4 c6
2.Nf3 d5
3.Nc3 dxe4
4.Ng5

i've seen this called the "Hector Gambit".

I would think of it as a Budapest with the extra move f4.  After 3...dxe4, White could try either 4.Ng5 or 4.Ne5.  I'm not sure which variation takes the most advantage from (or is least hurt by!) the move f4.

What do chess pub users think of 1e4 c5 2f4 d5 3Nf3!?  . It has been played 6 times according to chessbase nine (Once By IM Jonny Hector). I will try and put some analysis on the website soon.
