One titled player recently told me that he considered Nxe4 "pure cowardice for Black", but useful as drawing tool.  OTB at the club level, I would take on e5 unless I was up against a much stronger player.

Is this worth resurrecting, Schaakhamster?  I've got some ideas on these two lines, and Sokolov covers them both in his new book.  Might be good to take a look at some of them?

I was looking at the game in the subject which features a line which causes some concern for me.

1.e4  e5  2.Nf3  Nc6  3.Bb5  Nf6  4.0-0  Bc5 5.Nxe5

This is the most forcing line for white and black has 2 possibilities:

a) 5 ... Nxe5 preferred by Markovich in his old but very good Hard Chess column.

b) 5 ... Nxe4 preferred by GM Flear in his also old but also very good Offbeat Spanish book and also by Topalov in this game.

I would like to play the Classical Defence but this line is confusing me.  It feels like Black has to thread a minefield to survive. So can someone give me some guidance. Even a few interesting games with some ideas could be very helpfull.

got the book also. Quite good. Sokolov seems to prefer Nxe5 but rates both as slightly better for white. Nxe4 seems to be more solid for black but allows white to reach a better endgame whilst Nxe5 is more complex.
