I think it is a much worse version of the Samisch or Hubner. As white hasnt played e3 white has Bg5 and as white hasnt lost a tempo with a3 you cant counter quickly enough. I even think you can get a favourable version of the Romanishin variation if white goes g3 at some point. Still it is a nimzo, so all my comments are a bit relative as in the Nimzo you can make any "theoretically bad move" and still not come out much worse as long as the move makes sense. Bxc3 obviously does in a Nimzo.

If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

Obviously 4..b6 and 4...c5 are well known replies to 4 nf3. I think 4..0-0 was recommended by Dearing in his Nimzo. But what i would like to know is whether there is a  problem with black playing 4...Bc3 as it seem the most natural at club level

I see nothing very wrong with it, since with this pawn structure, the knight wants to be on e2, not f3.

Although this introduces the possibility of Nf3-d2-b3 (where it is also useful that White has kept his a-pawn on a2), taking the sting out of Black's q-side play to some extent. Nc6-a5 idea loses much of it's point.

OK, White diverts an attacking piece, but at least in comparison to the Samisch, WHite is not under pressure to go all in, and can afford a more leisurely buildup.

Whatever the theoretical verdict, I adjudge this variation to be a little too co-operative in practice.

An old thread on the 4.Nf3 Nimzo contained some coverage of this variation: http://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1233759033/0

I stand by my opinion in that thread that White is slightly better, although having said this, Black's position is still pretty solid.

Indeed I'm not too surprised to see that several books regard it as leading to equal or unclear positions (i.e. as better than 4. e3 Bxc3+), though I also wouldn't be surprised if it is suboptimal somehow.
