The second volume is out! The book is, as expected, exceptionally good. I was glad to see how Mr. Shipov tried to prove that the hedgehog with Bd3 (like in the Sicilian Kan/Paulsen) is playable for Black. It is interesting to compare it with "Opening for white according to Anand 8" in which all lines ended with +- or +=. There is one line in which they clash:
(Khalifman ch19, c1b)1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 e6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 a6 5. Bd3 Nf6 6. O-O d6 7. c4 b6 8. Nc3
Bb7 9. Qe2 Be7 10. b3 O-O 11. Bb2 Nbd7 12. Rad1 Qc7 13. Bb1 Rfe8 14. f4 Bf8 15.
Kh1 Rad8 16. Nf3 g6
Shipov analyses 17.e5 and says that "17. Ng5 Bg7" is harmless, while this is Khalifman's main line. Khalifman's line goes 17. Ng5 Bg7 18. Ba3 Bf8 and it ends on move 25 with the evaluation +=. I did some analysis and I found a mistake in Khalifman's notes. He says that Black loses after 17. Ng5 Bg7 18. Ba3 Nc5 19.e5 Nh5 20. b4 "since after the retreat of the knight he loses the d6 pawn". But Black does not have to retreat, he can play 20. .. de.  Black is better after 21. bc Nxf4 22.Rxf4 ef. White probably has to play 21. fe Bxe5 but Black comes out in top in my computer analysis. A funny line is 21. fxe5 Bxe5 22. Rxf7 Nf4 23. Rxd8 Rxd8 24. Qg4 Qxf7 25. Nxf7 Kxf7
26. bxc5 Bxg2+ 27. Kg1 Bd4#

That was one of the wittier introductions I have read in a chess book.  Grin A good way of establishing a lighthearted tone for the book.

It has been said that chess players are good at two things, Chess and Excuses.  It has also been said that Chess is where all excuses fail! In order to win you must dare to fail!

Does he gives something good about mine and BPaulsen's ideas shown in the thread "An attacking line against the Hedgehog"? Smiley

The book is very useful for me, to say the least.

When will the 2nd volume be out?
Any coverage of Sicilian-type hedgehogs in Vol #2?

Apart from the quality of the book, what is the general reputation of the Hedgehog compared to other main defences as black?

Of course the system suits very well to a player who plays Nimzo-/Queens-Indian as black against 1.d4 and Sicilian Kan against 1.e4 - but what is your opinion about the opening in general?

I think the system is well-regarded both theoretically and as a practical weapon.  But then I would say that ...

Circumstantial evidence (circumstantial because I don't know that this is one of the reasons) is that both Kosten and Marin's English repertoires avoid it with a 2.g3 move order ...

As a Hedgehog practitioner, I agree that the book is a goldmine.  For an absolute beginner in the Hedgehog, I think Danny King's recent PowerPlay DVD does a tremendous job (also has some lovely games for the more advanced player).

This book is like a freaking PhD dissertation; dense, methodical, complete, original. It puts most opening books to shame.

Have to agree that it does seem to be really very good indeed. Amazingly readable for a chess book but you don't get the feeling that there is anything concrete missing.

Seriously impressive work by the translator too actually. There's a lot of prose and it all reads very naturally.

Anyone knows how many volumes there eventually will be and the overall content in each?

There will be 2 volumes total. The second volume should be roughly the same in size.

The exact TOC is not available yet, Sergey is still working on it  Smiley

Will Mr. Shipov analyse the Hedgehog with Bd3 in the second (or third) volume? That part was lacking in the Russian version. He promised it somewhere in the beginning of the book but somehow the book ended after the analyses of the Bg2 and Be2 systems.

I forwarded your question to GM Shipov and got an immediate reply:

(Loosely translated)  Smiley

"Yes, I intend to include the lines with Bd3 in the second volume and substantially expand them compared to the Russian edition."

Apparently, there will be a few completely new sections as well. Stay tuned  Wink
