Also don't forget Davies' Pirc video.

Lengthy (7 hours), detailed considering the medium, surprisingly helpful. Well worth it. (unlike a number of chessbase dvds).

If you have the DVD, Pirc Alert 1, PIBAW, then off you go. But be careful of 4Bg5....

I agree: Strategic explanations in Pirc Alert are very good and much more compared to Vigus.
Vigus is up to date on the other hand

I have read through Pirc Alert (1st Ed) at least three times, even without a board, as the material suits that well, and scribbled many notes in it.

I've not read PIB&W through, and I wouldn't, as I use it for reference, and it's the one I take to tournaments with me.

Both have a place in my library.

It may be a possible to pick up a cheap second hand copy of the First Pirc Alert which would definitely be worth doing for the blurby bits. The holes in the repertoire can be filled from PIB&W, or you could just go with the one James Vigus suggests.

Vigus's book is a fairly conventional survey, for both sides, with the usual amount of comment. Pirc Alert is a repertoire for Black, and has masses of explanation - more than any other openings book I know. You can learn a lot from it, not just about the Pirc but about related openings (e.g. Philidor) too. I wouldn't want to be without it if I were a Pirc player. (Unless I were so strong that I only needed the analysis, not the explanations: in that case I'm sure Vigus would suffice.)

There is a quite detailed review of the revision at 'Chess Cafe': http://www.chesscafe.com/hansen/hansen.htm.

Potted version of the review, Twitter-style:

'Barely updated at all. Bit of a con. Don't buy.'

Just buy Vigus' PIBAW instead.

I have Vigus' work but I wonder if, having it, there is any reason to have this one as well.  Do you know for a fact that it adds little?

Have the first book, read the review wherein the few updates were listed. Pity that they could not be bothered to do a proper update. Verging on the fraudulent.

Have Vigus' book. Am pretty familiar with it as I was in regular contact with James as he was writing. We discussed a few of the lines and I checked some stuff and gave a few of my thoughts. Cannot see that Pirc Alert adds in any way to PIBAW, no.

my opinion:
PIrc Alert II is not worse than the first edition, but there is not enought new stuff for the owner of the first edition.

Also threre was never a book against d4 for blac, which was planned according to the introduction in the first edition.

I think it got canned for COFBE, preferring the Acc Sic to the Pirc

Really disappointing, as I liked the first edition although I never played the pirc.  Obviously Chernin was not involved in the second edition. Also threre was never a book against d4 for blac, which was planned according to the introduction in the first edition.
A pity, as the concept was really interesting.
BTW it was the only book I liked from Alburt Smiley

Disappointing, but not entirely surprising.
