I see that Chessbase's blurb for CBM 129 speaks of Rogozenko "presenting a rarely-played idea" and "suggesting the move 12...Ba6."  But if that is in the position after 6. Nxc6 bc 7. e5 Nd5 8. Ne4 Qc7 9. f4 Qb6 10. c4 Bb4+ 11. Ke2 f5 12. Nf2, it's considered the main line in each of several books I checked published in the period 1999-2008.

No, Rogozenko's recommendation is 10...Ne3 11.Qd3 Bb4+ 12.Bd2 and now 12...Ba6!?.Black seems to be OK here.

I suppose it's correct that Sicilian Four Knights are not for top level.Just look at Topalov- Ivanchuk Nanjing 2008,where White won very easily.

Still I think that 6.Ndb5 Bb4 (6...d6 may be better-Sveshnikov) 7.a3 Bxc3 8.Nxc3 is the only critical try for White. If Black has any good ideas in that line, then the Four Knights would be an ideal Sicilian (easy to learn;not so much theory;easy to play).

6.Nxc6 may be OK for Black.Rogozenko has made a video of that in CBM 129,where he shows new ideas for Black. Wink

At the highest levels, the Four Knights must be considered a drawing weapon, but the downside is that Black is playing for only one result.

At  lower levels, say 2000 and under, White can easily get in early trouble by playing routine moves.

Well I'm a nobody, but I will opine that 6.Nxc6 is a pretty good try.  The chess there is so difficult that I doubt anybody really knows The Truth.  I might sooner go that way that play into the IQP lines, even though I'm sure they favor White slightly.  The third way is the pawn sac with Be3, which I have heard good things about.

In "Experts vs the Sicilian" Raetsky describes the Four Knights as a "rather sad variation" and "rubbish". He may have been joking ...

Sorry , but I doubt you can draw conclusion from a game like that played by players never heard of....

In my experience 6. Nxc6 is not generally considered to lead to an advantage for White, and 8...Qc7 is considered better than 8...Qa5+.

You may want to consider another line Tongue.  The Four Knights Sicilian is considered to leave white with at the very least a small advantage.

Here's a nice game which demonstrates that...

White: Nicholson, Matthew
Black: NM Green, Austen

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 Nc6
6.Nxc6 bxc6 7.e5 Nd5 8.Ne4 Qa5+ 9.c3 f5 10.exf6 Nxf6
11.Nxf6+ gxf6 12.Be2 Ba6 13.O-O Bxe2 14.Qxe2 Rg8 15.Be3 Qe5 16.Rfe1 Bc5 17.Bxc5 Qxc5 18.Rad1 Qg5 19.g3 Qc5 20.Qd3 Qe7
21.Rd2 Rg7 22.Qa6 Kf8 23.Red1 Qe8 24.Rd6 Rf7 25.Qb7 Rb8 26.Qxa7 Rxb2 27.Rxd7 1-0

Uh, the usual view has long been that White should be able to reach a slight (not a clear) advantage.  I have the impression that Alexander Raetsky's "Meeting 1. e4" is well-regarded.

Agree with all the above (I have the book).
To add: the positions are solid, but perhaps rather dull for black.

Also - watch out for the Be2 gambit, as advocated in Dangerous Weapons: Sicilian.

Sicilian Four Knights

Hello. I had just studied the Four Knights Sicilian for Black,as a good addition to my repertoire.

However, after 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 Nc6 6.Ndb5 Bb4 7.a3 Bxc3 8.Nxc3 it seems that in all cases White gets the better of it due to his two bishops.Engines also support this with a usual assessment of +/-.Anyone have any ideas? Of course,I can simply play 6...d6 with a transposition to a Sveshnikov, but of course I don't want to discard 6...Bb4 so quickly Cheesy

Thanks in advance for taking the time to look at this variation.
