Question for 1.e4 gurus:

What is supposed to be White's leading plan/best play for advantage against 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 e5 4.Nf3 Nd7?  Am I right that something like 5.Bc4 Be7 6.0-0 c6 7.a4 0-0 is played, and if so, then what?

I have always thought that the main line of the Hanham-Philidor ended here ... White has so many options. Maybe it's better to ask a few more concrete questions. Here I go.

Is h2-h3 necessary? If yes, when?
Where must the Queen's Bishop go? b2 or e3?
How useful is a4-a5?
Will the King's Rook go to d1 or e1?

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

I have the DVD on the Philidor by Shirov. It's aimed at the White player mainly, although useful prep for Black too.

The refutes his own g4 gambit on it.

He then recommends the positional play with the a4 restraint and a later d5.

Those who want to go by my perverse footsteps play such pawn structure with fuzzy atypical still strategic orientations

Try 5.g4 as played by Shirov several times.

If you want to play the Main Line, there was a nice article in NIC 91, where black plays b6.
White has different setups like b3 Lb2(a3), or Qe2 Rd1 .
but I am not aware of a MAIN line for white, even the best players seem to change setups quite often...
