3...Be7 is a nice waiting move. Especially if White wants to go for topical lines - like Qg4 against the Winawer or e5 against Nf6 variations. Both moves are somehow out of question - 4.Qg4 Nf6! 5.Qg7 Rg8 6.Qh6 de4 is certainly not bad for Black and 4.e5 without a knight on f6 looks somehow strange. Therefore White will have to go for calmer lines (probably with some slight advantage) when Black has avoided a lot theoretical discussions. I should try this ... Smiley

At the Staunton Memorial event this month, Nigel Davies won as Black vs Lawrence Trent using the rare Kellner variation of the French, 3 Nc3 Be7.

This was developed by the strong Australian postal player John Kellner in the early 1960s, was carried to Europe around 1968 by the Australian IM Max Fuller and had a brief burst of publicity in the late 1970s in the hands of the very strong Ukrainian GM Oleg Romanishin (the Morozevich of his day, in terms of succeeding with off-beat opening lines at a high level)..

It seems to me that the move Be7 is rather less logical after 3 Nc3 than after 3 Nd2, but it develops a piece, enables ...Nf6 to be played without fear of Bg5, and generally waits for White to show his hand. The downsides are that it leaves g7 unguarded and, compared to 3 ...Bb4 and 3...Nf6, it puts no pressure on White's centre.

In recent years we've seen stranger moves in the French than this prove viable, so perhaps this is one to watch - or even play, before it becomes widely known again!
