I was hoping to trial 8..Tb8!? suggested by my friend, IM Andrew Martin. Anyone got thoughts on this?

Hi.

There is a page on 3...e5 (called Philidor - by - Stealth) in the Pirc & Modern Defence pdf in the 1.e4 ... section subscriber area.   The verdict there is however not very positive.

With regard to other sources I think there is an old NIC Yearbook article about 3... e5 which perhaps could be ordered from NIC as a separate print.  There is also a chapter (The Lion´s Yawn) in the "The Black Lion".

Cheers / Anders

Ps
I also saw the article in NIC Yearbook where 7...a6 and 8...b6 was suggested.

I think the moves Re1 and a4 are interchangeable.  If so, White can perhaps play 7.a4 first and then 8.a5 if black continues 7...a6.

This is slightly off-topic, but it is noteworthy that recently a number of GMs have decided to play 5.Bc4 Be7 6.0-0 0-0 7.Re1 a6 8.a4 b6 instead of the usual 7...c6, as covered in Yearbook 91. White should retain his typical slight advantage, but it has scored well in recent Grandmaster practice.

Thanks for that. I would only play the Philidor via the Lion move order. I am looking forward to many Queenless middlegames!

Hi.

In the subscribers section there is a pdf "2.Nf3 Various Black replies" which on pages 7-12 have the chapters "Philidors defence 3... exd4" and "Philidor Hanham & 3...f5.  Updated latest August 2009.

There is also an ebook there which however have not been updated for a long time (2004).

I'm hoping to find material on the Philidor and Lion Defences somewhere on this forum plus maybe an eBook or two. I've not had much luck! Can anyone help please?
