I agree with you bragesjo, and that is why I offered my opponent a draw, even though he was 300 points lower rated than me.

The position on the board at the end of my game was equal, but white seems to have had hardly any tangible plans to go for, whereas black can always think about further undermining the weak white k-side pawns.

You are not disremembering. After reading the initial post I looked at this line and ended up with that position. It looked very equal to me.

Of course the position is equal and probebly even a draw by correct play, but at lower levels the position is easer to play as black (as opposed to several endgames in mainline) since whites kingside pawns are weaker.

This Be3 Be2 0-0-0 line has also been recommended by a chessbase magazine, dont remember the number (but it was seveal months after Dangerous Weapons was publiched) and they gave lines in video format , where they claimed that white is better. They mentioned all black lines except Ng4 Bxg4 Be6 Smiley

At any rate this setup is dangeroeus if black does not know what he is doing and the line you gave is the way to go. The Be6 system is also dangerous for white, I have won many games with black where white players falied to play the best moves. If I am not missrembering I think I meet Bxg7 Kxg7 h4 is some game where I played Ne5 with the idea of Nc4 forcing a queen exchange.

h4 might be worth a try, but even then black can play Qa5 with Rfc8 to follow. It becomes more difficult for white to take on e6 now because of all the black pieces pointing at c3.

I think some sources say ne5 and qa5 also looks good for equality after h4.

Perhaps this is the line to play then if black wants to equalise without any real problems.

The other practical problem I seem to find is that if black swaps the queens off, and white hasn't really finished his kingside attack, i.e. h4 is on the board, there is a risk that the black king could eventually walk up the board and take white pawns.

Of course, the position is probably level, but white must always be on the lookout for this I think.

FYI, Agdestein drew with black against Short in this line in 2008.

Well, I notice that ECO thinks 12. h4 should lead to an unclear position (a couple of different ways).

It would seem that 9...Ng4 has been resuscitated; I recall when it was considered bad.

Quite an interesting system as recommended in the 07 Dangerous Weapons book.

I recently played a game with white against a young junior who appears to have found a way to diffuse the problems.

1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 d6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Nf6 5 Nc3 g6 6 Be3 Bg7 7 Be2 Nc6 8 Qd2 0-0 9 0-0-0 Ng4

This looks like a good line for equality

10 Bxg4 Bxg4 11 f3 Be6 12 Nxe6 fxe6 13 Bh6 Qb6!? 14 h4 Qd4!? 15 Qg5 Qe5

and the game is headed for a queenless endgame where the position is level. Pretty good play from a 1940 junior against a player 300 points higher than him.

Does anyone have any ideas about how to keep the game interesting?

On a final point, I think my opponent worked all this out at the board because he stopped for thought after 0-0-0.

Looks like I will have to bite the bullet and learn the main lines.

Huh
