Black's results with 4...Nc6 are not exactly encouraging thus far. Lanka-Fuller, Adelaide 1990 and Jasny-Totsky, Pardubice 2008 are examples of a successfull strategy for White. One interesting question is 4...Nc6 5.Nf3 Nb4 6.Bb5+ c6 7.Be2 is more precise. My first impression is that it is just a transposition, assuming that Black has to play ...c5 anyway.

Thanks for the game references, I see what you mean. Against the strategy of playing h4, h5, Rh3, Rg3 Black seems to lose valuable time playing h6 and Bf8.
In the version with 3...h6 4.Bd3 Nc6 Black is better prepared to handle this plan, so my reasoning by analogy was faulty.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

I recommend 4.Bd3, when both 4...Nf6 5.e5 Nfd7 6.Qg4 g6 7.Nce2 (7.h4 may be even better) c5 8.c3 and 4...de4 5.Ne4 Nf6 6.Nf3 Nbd7 are slightly better for White.

I have heard 4.Nf3 recommended in one source, but after 4...Nf6 5.e5 Nfd7 a transposition to the 5.Nf3 c5 6.dc5 Nc6 7.Bf4 Nc5 variation is likely, e.g. 6.Bf4 (White probably has something better than this) c5 7.dc5 Nc6 8.Qd2 Nc5.

I don't have Davies' DVD, but by analogy with 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 h6 4.Bd3, 4...Nc6 seems reasonable?

For example 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Be7 4.Bd3 Nc6 5.Nf3 Nb4 6.Be2 Nf6 7.e5 Ne4 8.a3 Nxc3 9.bxc3 Nc6 and 10...Na5.

Is that a deliberate spelling mistake?

Nigel 'Another DVD' Davies has just released a chessbase jobbie on this. Have a look at that.

I ran into trouble a couple of knights ago when my opponent played

1. e4 e6
2. d4 d5
3.Nc3 Be7 what should I play against this sneaky line.
