My tastes tend toward contemporary Country music (Keith Urban, Lady Antebellum), contemporary Christian and rock/jazz like Maroon 5.  My earliest influences/roots were folk/rock.  I am also a song writer and musician (guitar player) myself so I end up performing or listening to my own creations as well.

Chess, music/song writing and sports have been life long interests for me.

My brother-in-law died recently and I inherited some of his excellent vinyl.  As a result I've been listening to a lot of 1960s rock that I never listened to properly the first time.  The Ventures particularly have become a new taste of mine.

My own collection has tended recently toward old, pre-1950 blues; you can get a lot of it re-mastered on good vinyl.  I have a good two-record set of Blind Willie McTell, for example.  That's the sort of stuff I like.

I'm also big on fado.

I love Metal and Techno. Nightwish? Paul Oakenfold? DJ Tiesto?

But anyways as long as its not country i'll probably listen to it and enjoy it.

I use cd player too! Or Pandora or youtube. Never Ipod - waste of money!

I actually will listen to most music as long as it is not country muskic and I do apologize to all you country muskic fans out there but the world is a depressing enough place as it is with out songs about lost love, wifes leaving, being lonely, your dog dying....etc... Cry
I like TRW prefer hard rock/metal...the old Nightwish before they dumped Tarja Turunen, Ozzy Osbourne, Turisas, Iron Maiden, The Sweet, Pink Flyod, Molly Hatchet, Battle Beast.....I also listen to some rap, Insane Clown Possie and Snoop (Eminen is so last year)....Classical...Wagner (Flight of the Valkyrie), Tchaikovsky (1812 Overture & others) and Beethoven (Symphony No 9)... I'm reminded again of something Short wrote recently, approximately "The biggest fallacy in chess is the quasi-religious belief in the primacy of the opening."

I've mentioned before that I play guitar, and speaking of Jackson Brown, I absolutely LOVE this song.  It's very soothing to play on a nice acoustic:

Another guy I've been listening to a lot lately goes by the name "Tallest Man on Earth":

I also like Feist lately:

but what's wrong with Rachmaninov? I love his piano concertos

I prefer his Isle of the Death, Symphonic Dances and The Bells.

The CD that gets most time in my player right now is Rumer's debut album "Seasons Of My Soul" from 2010. Beautiful, soulful voice; it's almost like having Karen Carpenter back again!

I also discovered Jackson Browne last year, an artist that is strangely underappreciated in Europe. Favorite album: His heaviest and most political; "Lives in the Balance".

In classical, I finally bought Josef Suk's Serenade for strings. I already prefer it to his teacher Dvorak's more famous one.

@Michael Ayton: Agree with a lot of your likes/dislikes, but what's wrong with Rachmaninov? I love his piano concertos (but then I love piano concertos in general, especially from the Vienna school, the Romantics and the National Romantics).

For newer stuff, I'm really liking Gotye and Sufjan Stevens (though Sufjan has been around for about 10 years now I guess):

I'm a mainly 'Classical' music obsessive, with a full choral training (though I haven't actually sung outside the shower for 20+ years!) and a huge CD (and music books) collection. In general I love medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and C20/contemporary music and shy away from the later C19. Biggest favs = Purcell, Monteverdi, Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Bruckner, Mahler, Wolf, Sibelius, Bartok, Ravel; big non-favs = Brahms, Verdi, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, and sugar on my porridge. Performers? -- too many to mention, though I can't help mentioning the wondrous Jordi Savall and his sadly missed wife Monserrat Figueras. I also love lots of other music even though I don't buy the discs so much -- Bill Evans, Coltrane, John Surman ...  Also I've been getting into Hindustani music quite a bit lately. Ravi Shankar and Amjad Ali Khan at last year's Edinburgh Festival were just head-rearranging!

1) I like that their songs are always fun and 2) they write their own stuff. 3) Plus she has an incredible voice.

2 is nothing special since say Chuck Berry and on 1 and 3 I disagree.

Currently really into Karmin, an act set-up through youtube that got a record deal in Dec 2011.

This is their first song and they make a reference to chess in it at 2:46 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOorxvAVqb4

Also they just played the following new song live yesterday: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbObh9iQ-dI&feature=plcp&context=C3a85e08UDOEgsTo...

I like that their songs are always fun and they write their own stuff. Plus she has an incredible voice.
