I have noticed the same... No more QI among the big boys. But I want to ask you all: Will you keep playing the QI? I think is very good and the stronger player will prevail

Hey guys, could we skip the swipes and talk about chess?  I particularly don't like to read stuff like, "experience teaches me that talking to you is useless."  Just say what you have to say about chess, and if the other guy comes back with something evasive or ad hominem, just calmly say that he's not staying on the topic.  Wait for a rhetorical offense, in other words, and don't condemn the other guy based on past alleged misbehavior.

Past experience tells me that there's not much point in me arguing with you, since the argument invariably goes around in circles or no conclusions are reached until the other person admits you are correct.

I don't believe I've ever gone back and forth with you over anything theoretical, and the only person I've had prolonged theoretical discussions with is Markovich. All me and you have bantered over before is meta-theoretical stuff like repertoires, in which case there really isn't a "wrong" opinion.

I've admitted I'm wrong when I'm wrong, which I've done with TonyRo before in a King's Indian Defense discussion.

Of course, judging from the following you're just pulling a cop-out:

Quote:
And besides, I don't have the time to discuss opening theory in a lot of detail, and I should use my home preparation for tournament play rather than bulletin board discussions. Wink

This is a forum largely dedicated to chess openings, a forum of which you're a moderator with hundreds of posts.

Yeah, no time to discuss openings.  Grin

Spare me the cop-out.  Lips Sealed

Grin Even if it were pedantic, who cares?

There's nothing wrong with 12...0-0 intending to follow with c5 and Nc6. 12...Qd7 and 13...Nc6 is just awkward, because it does nothing to pressure white's pawn chain.

From your move order it could occur via 12...c5 13. Kg2 0-0. e6 accomplishes nothing, and ...Nc6 is coming soon. Qd7 can be played as necessary.

I think this line is a small part of the reason:

1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nf3 b6 4. g3 Ba6 5. b3 Bb4+ 6. Bd2 Be7 7. Bg2 c6 8.Bc3 d5 9. Nbd2

Black is slightly worse and somewhat passive.

That actually transposed to a variation of the Catalan, and black isn't considered worse. In the critical line white plays Bf4 (Bc3 creates problems on the c-file).

Speaking of this thread, Leko just wheeled out the Queen's Indian Defense against Kramnik.

The game was drawn.

The 6E525F6A485F495F4E49555C080B0A0A3A03 is fine, right now fashion is simply elsewhere, particularly the sharper openings (Semi-Slav, Vienna QGD, etc.).

The variation mentioned by wolfsblut can be met with 5...Bb4+ instead of 5...c5, and black has the full share of play (it typically will transpose to a variation of the Closed Catalan that has done alright for black).

I agree that 5...Bb4 is a good option for Black, but claiming that it completely equalises is too optimistic. After 7.e4 d5 8.cd5 Bf1 9.Kf1 ed5 10.e5 Ne4 11.Nc3 Nc3 12.bc3 Qd7 13.Kg2 Nc6 14.h4 h6 15.Rae1 White is slightly better. The main advantage of 5...Bb4 over 5...c5/...Bb7 is that it is solid for Black and the price for not knowing the theoretical move is significantly lower. Only 7.Bg2 0-0 8.0-0 c6 is likely to transpose to a Catalan.

I didn't claim it equalizes (having full share of the play means you have a fully playable position, it doesn't necessarily mean equal).

Why is white slightly better in that position, a computer evaluation, or GM analysis? After 15...Qe6 I'm not seeing why white is better, his only plan is arranging f4-f5, black can play ...g6/Rg8 to respond to it, and white has the hole on c4 that black can put to use with Na5-c4.

And it's not like black's play was forced on move 12 or 13.

Hi,
that is indeed true- I think it is because of the variation 4.g3 Ba6 5.Qc2 c5 6.d5!? where white get good compensation and black has to defend with little chance to win....

when you've a look at the latest high class tournaments, after d4 Nf6, c4 e6, Nf3 nobody did play the good old b6. Instead d5 is the move even of my QI hero Adams. Did i miss something? Is there a new refutation of the QI?
