Thanks, guys.

I'd seen that review, and found it a bit unenlightening. I mean, I'm not above kvetching about the typesetting either, but when this comprises the bulk of the review....

I'm coming at this as someone who has finally decided to bite the bullet and get a bit more serious about improving my tactics / calculatin, and am always on the lookout for good material. Wrt Jupp's comments, I guess some framework / context can help in this respect, but I was a bit concerned that Averbakh's work might drift off too far into the realm of meta-theory to be of much practical use.

Having the German book from the Sportverlag I have read through it nearly completely.

It's a very good book if you search for a thinking system about tactics. If you want a book for practising there are better ones out today and were at that time.

(From someone around 1900-2000 when reading it.)
