Hey guys,

I remembered studying this variation and I had one game with it against a 2300 from stuttgart. I ultimately started playing other lines due to never getting to play the marshall, just the anti marshalls.  I will track down the game and post it. Might be worth something, maybe.

Just received my copy of Sabino Brunello's book.  He doesn't mention this option for Black at all as far as I can tell.  Maybe I'm tilting at windmills, but this line look rather intriguing...

Just an observation, but we have far too many threads on this forum with abstract assertions about the merits of a particular opening line.  I was asking a rather specific question about a specific line, and would be grateful if posters stayed on topic.

So let me ask again (or in a slightly different way): what are the merits of 18...bxa4 in the line mentioned at the top of this thread?  Is this a playable line or has it been busted recently?

In correspondence play, attention has been given to 22..Rxe1 23.Qxe1 Bxf4 24.Rxc6 Re8 25.Bxd5 Kf8 26.Be6! Bxd2 27.Qxd2 Bxc6 28.Rc5 with an ending that is considered slightly better for White, although I don't think its been tested in high-level praxis.

Thanks for this.  Pavlovic gives 22...Rxe1 23.Qxe1 Bxf4 24.Rxc6 Bxd2 25.Qxd2 Re8 26.Rc5 Bf3 and he provides further analysis, which he claims places Black in the driving seat.

Well, I can tell you that some years ago, this line was thought to lead to an ending that was slightly better for White.  The main line ran: 18..bxa4 19.Rxa4 f5 20.Qf1 Qh5 21.Rxa6 f4 22.Bxf4 . . .

From here:

Ivanchuk-Short, Riga 1995 continued 22..Bh3 23.Rxe6 Bxf1 24.Nxf1 Bxf4 25.Rxa6 Qf3 26.Bxd5 Qxd5 27.gxf4 Qf3 28.d5 h5?! and White went on to win.  But Dolmatov suggested 28..Rxf4, and this may allow Black to equalize.

This is where theory stood at the time of Tim Harding's Marshall CD.  I don't know how or if its evolved since then.  Maybe someone can bring us forward?

Question about the mainline Marshall

A quick question about the following line:

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Be7 6.Re1 b5 7.Bb3 0-0 8.c3 d5 9.exd5 Nxd5 10.Nxe5 Nxe5 11.Rxe5 c6 12.d4 Bd6 13.Re1 Qh4 14.g3 Qh3 15.Be3 Bg4 16.Qd3 Rae8 17.Nd2 Re6 18.a4

I noticed that 18...bxa4, which receives some coverage in Pavlovic's book is not even mentioned as a sideline in the chesspub ebook.  Is this a sign of it not being topical?  Not important?  Debunked?  Is this a viable move, and just slightly less popular than 18...Qh5, or is it noticeably inferior for Black?
