23. Ndxe6 Qxe5. Black's move is forced. Taking on e6 is bad: 23. ... fxe6 24. Nxg6 and Black can not deal with the destructive discovered check since the e7-bishop has no suitable square: 24. ... Bd8 25. Ne7+ leads to mate; 24. ... Bc5 25. Nf4+ Kh8 26. Qxe6 Qg7 27. Ng6+; 24. ... Bg5 25. h4 Qf7 26. hxg5 Rxg6 27. b4! Nb3 28. Qh3 wins an exchange. Anyway back to the main line:

* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
*

Now I think White has two promising options:

(1) 24. b4 Qf6 lets look at the alternatives here: 24. ... Nb3 25. Rfe1 Qf6 26. b5 White is fighting for the d5 square! 26. ... Bd7 27. Nd5 Qh4 28. Ng5+! Bxg5 only move 29. Qxd7 and White wins the b7-pawn here.  24. ... h5 25. Qh3 fxe6 26. Nxe6 Nb3 27. Rfe1 and Black is lost since White is threatening Qxh5# as well. 25. bxa5 fxe6 26. Rfe1 Qg5 27. Qxg5 Bxg5 28. Nxg6 Kg7 29. a6 bxa6 30. h4 Bf6 31. Nf4 and White should have good winning chances in this ending.

(2) 24. Rfe1 Qxb2 forced 25. h4! now Black has a large number of choices here however White seems to be hold the upper hand in all of them. In fact this line looks like an improved version of the game continuation.

Lets look at 22. Bxg6 now 22. ... Kh8 is forced since 22. ... Bxf3 23. Qxf3 Qxe5? 24. Rfe1! is losing because the Queen has nowhere to go and if Black plays something else instead of 23. ... Qxe5? he is just a pawn down and still under attack. 23. Qh5 23. Rc1 is not that effective due to 23. ... Qd8 23. ... Bf8 forced 24. Bd3

* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
*

Black has a wide number of choices however it is hard to see what his compensation is. So I don't understand why Kramnik is considering the piece sacrifice 24. Bxf7? instead. After 24. ... Bxf3 25. Ng6+ Kg7 26. Qxf3 Qxf7 27. Nf4 avoiding the exchange of Queens 27. ... Kh8 and White should be worse.

GM Kramnik from chesspro.ru:

Quote:
After 22.Nxe6 + Black miraculously survives: 22 ... fxe6 23.Qxg6+ Kf8, and now white has a choice to take on e6 or h6. For example: 24.Qxh6+ Rg7 25.Nd4 Qxe5 26.Nxe6+ Qxe6! 27.Qxe6 Rxg2+ 28.Kh1 Rg6+! 29.Qxc6 Rgxc6. If not for this wonderful option, 26.Nxe6 simply should win. If 24.Qxe6, then 24 ... Bxf3 25.Qxh6+ Rg7 or 25.Qf5+ Kg7.

GM Aveskulov from chessdom.com:

Quote:
22.Nxe6!? fxe6 23.Qxg6 Kf8 24.Qxh6 Rg7 25.Nd4 Qxe5 (25...Bd7 26.Nxe6 Bxe6 27.Qxe6+-) 26.Qh8+ Kf7 27.Bg6! (blocking line g) Kxg6 28.Qxc8 Kh7 29.Nxc6 Nxc6 30.Rfe1 White is much better

Position after 21. ... Rg8:

* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *

Quote:
22. Nxe6+ fxe6 23. Qxg6+ Kf8 24. Qxh6+ Rg7 25. Nd4 Qxe5 26. Qh8+ Kf7 27. Bg6+!! the only move; I think both players missed this move and that is why Kramnik only looks at 26. Nxe6 27. ... Kxg6 taking with the rook loses: 27. ... Rxg6 28. Qxe5 and now capturing on g2 with either piece does not work for Black, for instance: 28. ... Rxg2 29. Kh1 Rg5+ 30. Nxc6! Rxe5 31. Nxe5 and White is winning. 28. Qxc8 it is hard to evaluate this position. I think paradoxically Black should avoid the endgame since then it will be easier for White to push his pawns: 28. ... Kh7 29. Nxc6 Qe4?! 30. g3 Qxc6 31. Qxc6 Nxc6 32. Rd7 Bf6 Black has to defend the b7-pawn so the bishop had to move but against any other bishop move White could respond with Rfd1 33. Rxg7 Kxg7 and I think White has very good prospects here so Black should keep the queens on board.

Any improvements for either side? Next time I will post what I have on 22. Bxg6.

In his retirement interview Ivanchuk said that he was winning against Kramnik however I have not found a win for White in that game. White obtains a large advantage in some lines but there is nothing close to a forced win. At any rate if you have any analysis please post them, the critical moves were: 22. Bxg6, 22. Nxe6+ and 23. Ndxe6.
