7...h5.

I am sure Milos will look at these lines too - but the immediate treatment will come in our newsletter very soon.

7. ... h5 was John Emms's recommendation in Play the Najdorf: Scheveningen Style as well. Fighting for the g4-square looks quite logical since the bishop is on e3 and 8. g5 Ng4 9. Bc1 (the only move if White wants to fight for an advantage) 9. ... Qb6 looks rather nice for Black.

So Milos will be covering the Khalifman/Saint Petersburg lines in Cutting Edge (vol. 2). Will he do the accepted Perenyi attack (Kasparov calls this the "Hungarian attack": 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 a6 6. Be3 e6 7. g4 e5 8. Nf5 g6 9. g5 gxf5 10. exf5 d5) as well?

Should I sign up for the newsletter or can I see it in your website?

Finally any guesstimates as to when Cutting Edge (vol. 2) and Cutting Edge (vol. 3) will come out? For volume 3 you said it would be 2011 but I hope we can get volume 2 in 2010.

It is no secret that the two main lines that clash are:

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 a6 6. Be3 e6 7. f3 b5 8. Qd2 Nbd7 9. g4 h6 10. O-O-O b4 11. Nce2 Qc7 12. h4 d5

and

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 a6 6. Be3 e6 7. f3 b5 8. Qd2 b4 9. Na4 Nbd7 10. O-O-O Qa5 11. b3 Bb7 12. a3 Qc7 13. axb4 d5

Both are quite complex positions; but I think we are holding up well in both lines. We did not manage to anticipate every idea; and obviously some good ideas were bound to come from the St Petersburg Team, but overall I am more than pleased.

I see. I guess both of these will get the extended treatment in Cutting Edge (vol. 2), right?

One more thing what is Ftacnik's choice against 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 a6 6. Be3 e6 7. g4

We do offer free shipping if you buy three books from our webshop inside the European postal area (not union, but Russia and Israel included, as an example). As the postage already costs more than we charge for it, we cannot do better than this.

Nothing for north america then Sad

I briefly saw the Khalifman book while visiting the Swedish Championship on the 6th July. He chose the critical lines against our repertoire (13.Bf4! as an example - you have to have the books to understand), it seems, and at some point deviates. I don't think they had the best options for White in some positions, but I have to analyse it deeper before I can say for sure. I am not deeply afraid of their options, but certainly this is a very serious team of analysts, so we take whatever they do very seriously.

I expect that we will have something on our website within a week.

I tried to guess the line by looking at Khalifman's table of contents and playing around with the opening explorer. Is it this one: 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 a6 6. Be3 e6 7. f3 b5 8. Qd2 Nbd7 9. g4 h6 10. O-O-O b4 11. Na4 Ne5 12. Qxb4 Bd7 13. Bf4:

* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
*

Hopefully Khalifman's line will be addressed in print when the second volume of "Cutting Edge: Open Sicilian" comes out.

The book has several intresting and strong noveltys, the Dragon chapters alone are worth the money.

The problems might be that sometimes only one move in a subvariation are examened. Often the variation are given assesments that more practise are needed to draw any conclusions.

Finally took the plunge and ordered the hardcover edition!

After my initial disappointment with Ftacnik's work (the whole 6. Bg5 debacle) I was thinking of buying Ftacnik's book plus the two volumes of cutting edge on Najdorf (volume 3 is dedicated to 6. Bg5 and GM Aagaard said that they will deal with Khalifman's recommendation in volume 2 which is Najdorf without 6. Bg5). And since I am an 1. e4 player I just thought why should not I get all the 3 volumes? The only problem is the price, I wish QC would give a discount when you buy more than a certain amount. Free shipping perhaps?

This book has been out quite a while. Can anyone who has bought it opine on the pros and cons of the book?

For anyone that has Cutting Edge 1: The Open Sicilian, would you say that this book is useful for players playing the black side of the Open Sicilian(s)?

I'm also curious about the Taimanov English Attack, but mainly the 8...Be7 9.f3 variation, where I agree with De La Villa and a recent Yearbook survey that 9...0-0 is probably a better try for equality than 9...h5, but it will be interesting to see how White can obtain an advantage against 10.g4 Rd8 (instead of 10...b5), especially since this move was not covered in 'Dismantling the Sicilian', presumably due to space constraints.

I recently did a small survey of 8...Be7 variation with 10...b5, based on my own 3 games in this line. It is published as an article at Crestbook.com. Unfortunately, the text is in Russian, but I also created an archive with comments in English (hope that moderators wouldn't mind this shameless plug Roll Eyes).

I would definitely like to hear your feedback and corrections on all of this. I am sure that there are still plenty of novelties hiding in this variation Cheesy
