Is there a way to make the chapters run one after the other, or do you have to initiate each one.
I sometimes find I'm not sure which chapter I've just watch - especially when the screen icon is far to the right of the indexing.
Maybe it's just me.

Yeah, well what I've actually been thinking of doing was getting a Home Cinemaa stand-alone system with an Amp that has several HDMI entry points. Would still have to click on the different chapters from the computer, but not a bad option in the meantime while Chessbase persist in their stubborn madness, but in the meantime there will definitely be no purchases!

The only reason I'd possibly consider buying a "DVD" (if you can call it that) like this one is if I could play it on my telly with my feet up on the sofa. I'm not going to take Davies that seriously that I'm going to put him up on my computer screen after a hard day at work. Thanks but no thanks - Chessbase get your act together.

???? where  are the "hanging pawns" e6-d5 in the Classical line  Shocked

He is talking about the 5.Nf3 line, right? Its main line obviously leads to hanging e6-d5 pawns:

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.e5 Nfd7 5.Nf3 c5 6.dxc5 Nc6 7.Bf4 Bxc5 8.Bd3 f6 9.exf6 Nxf6 or 9...Qxf6.

I would think that is "super quart grip," one of Hans Kmoch's terms.

Chessbase makes DVD's because they can sell them. So there is a demand. Basicly the chesspublic gets what it demands.

Yeah but didn't Ari Ziegler did one a few years back on the French? And Daniel King did 2 for Foxy if I remember correctly and those are more than sufficient for primers. I am willing to put more trust in them because these 2 players do play the French OTB ie. they put their $$$ where their mouths are.

Do we really need a DVD to tell us that the strategy behind the French as Ziegler puts it is to "attack the center pawns but if you see a chance to attack the enemy king, you should go for it." J/k. Wink

GM Davies may be a respected GM I'm sure but if Chessbase really wants a fresh take on the French, they could've ask Nigel Short, Bareev, Morozevich or Gurevich. Heck, I'll buy any DVD if it has Short presenting in it.  Cheesy

No offense to GM Davies (I've no doubt that he does his best to deliver a good product) but the first impressions I get from a DVD like this is akin to:

http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=3172

Q: What is your general evaluation of the Sicilian with 2.c3? What is your conclusion?
A: I would say that with good play from both sides, the Alapin Sicilian often leads to an "equality slightly better for White."

Q:How is your personal score against the Alapin?
A:I have never played Alapin myself with White for the simple reason that I am a 1.d4 player....  Huh

Another good point.

That quote was taken from Rogozenko plugging his CD on the 2.c3 Sicilian for white.

Ironically in his earlier book, Anti-Sicilians: A Guide for Black, he thumbed his nose at the Alapin and was quite disparaging to those who practised it.

I guess a man's gotta eat right.

Am I the only one who is getting completely sick of Chessbase releasing a DVD every two weeks? I'd prefer it if they started taking all of the awesome players they have making DVD's for them like Shirov, Van Wely, Rustam K, Bologan, and so on and just paid them what they paid them to make all of the DVDs and just have them spend a little more time and write a book. Books are just inherently better in my opinion if the consumer is just willing to invest more time to digest it.

Exactly! It is disappointing to see them only scratching the surface. Chess is a game of unfathomable depth. I don't think that four hours are enough to cover the depth of a single opening.
As such a DVD costs about the same as a book, it looks like easely earned money for the lecturers as well as for the producers...

In short, you're supposed to gamble that no one knows the best line against your set-up. And of course, in a club setting nobody will, right??
Well, no. It doesn't work that way anymore.

Even if it does I think it is a lame gamble. It's far better, during preparation, to assume that your opponents will play the best lines. If they deviate chances are much, much higher to emerge with an opening advantage; beneath ELO 2100 with both colours.
The question how not to screw up in the middle game is an entirely different one.

I agree of course, but I just want to clarify that sometimes the way to handle what Davies suggests is pretty simple such that a lot of players could find it at the board.
What really gets me is that authors use some different techniques to disguise an opening's real quality, but I digress. My main point is that they do this under the guise of presenting an opening good for club players.

Davies on Product Strategy:

a) When you get a good idea for a ChessBase DVD, tell ChessBase.
b) Find some games that keep the viewer glued to the chair, then book a studio.
c) Talk for 4 hours.
d) Draw arrows and highlight squares when you don't have enough hours and minutes, since ChessBase doesn't do a second screening.
e) Repeat the process after 3-5 weeks.

I haven't watched the DVDs, but apparently the strategy is working.  Wink
