Well, 1.f4 b6 should be possible!

Well, after reading the various threads on the Bird I guess any black first move should be possible Smiley
The most important issue will then probably be to make a consistent plan. Most likely a choice between making the Neo-From work (including possible transpos to the Kings Gambit) or a more solid reply, as suggested by TN or Palliser in BUCO.

There are many threads on the Bird (and anti-Bird) in this forum, including discussions on the From and 2...Nc6. Try googling.  Wink

I already mentioned this on another thread, but I think that 1...d5 2.Nf3 g6 3.e3/g3 Bg7 4.Be2/Bg2 Nh6 5.0-0 c6 6.d3 0-0 7.Qe1 or some other non-committal move 7...Nd7 8.Knight move and now e5, Qb6, Nf5(f7) and possibly ...Re8 in some order is an effective Anti-Bird weapon. I have used this weapon myself, gaining an advantage in each game I have tried it.

Thanks, I'll have a look at that. It doesn't really answer my specific question, but since I'm looking just for a good line against the Bird this may come in handy.

What other openings do you play as Black? If the Sicilian then 1.f4 c5. If the KID then 1.f4 g6.

lol, no real help here I guess. Versus 1. d4 I usually play some kind of English Defence/Dutch hybrid, against 1. e4 mostly Alekhine's Defence, but also Philidor. I noticed a transposition possibility after 1. f4 d6; 2. Nf3 e5, this gives white some options but can easily transpose in a normale From's.

Have a decent chat up line ready.

I think 4 h3 might be good. if 4 ...d6 then 5 e4. Allowing Black to get back the pawn, White plays Bc4 and Nc3 etc. Then you have a kind of King's Gambit Declined where White has played h3  and Black g5. Both moves are 'out of place' but I think g5 hurts Black more.

Approaching the Bird

Hi all,

In a few weeks I have to play an important game with black against a strong player (dutch rating app. 2150) who seems to play 1. f4. It's a sort of must-win situation and as I fear he is more patient than I, I'm thinking about playing From's gambit, but with 2. ..-Nc6. Chesspub regards this as a good move and databases seem to show nothing convincing for white (perhaps 3. Nf3-g5; 4. g3-g4; 5. Nh4, but gambiting with ..-d6 seems promising.
Am I missing something or is there a very obvious reason why 2. ..-Nc6 isn't played more often?
Any other good off-beat tries?
