For the first look, I´m really disappointed. Almost 50 pages of Rubinstein system are worthless for any dynamic and therefore true French player. To leave them blank for remarks would have been more useful.

30 more pages on the Tarrasch with 3....c5. Maybe Black´s best way to battle the Tarrasch, but inspiring?

Thanks, now I know it's not for me.

A blurb has appeared on the chessvibes website. It is not strictly a review but does contain the table of contents that appears elsewhere on this thread, It appears to avoid the complications of 3.Nc3 by advocating the Burn/Rubenstein variations. The number of pages does appear to make it look sparse, however, avoiding 3.Nc3 complications would certainly reduce the book's expected weight! Smiley

Both 3.Nc3 Nf6 and 3.Nc3 Bb4 are treated as can be seen from the list of content.

Too true, when the book chapters downloaded the last three chapters were missing...quite odd as they reappeared when I checked again.

I have received my copy a few hours ago. There are some omissions about certain lines, but Chess Stars are similar to other publishers, such as Quality Chess, where the content is geared towards higher ranking players. The 4. Nb5 line is fairly silly and for the sake of space I believe Vitiugov has omitted analysis of such lines. It is not too difficult to play against such minor sidelines without the help of a book, especially for anyone 2000+ ELO.

However, I agree that the Rubinstein is allotted excessive coverage. Other lines such as the Winawer should have been covered more extensively. Perhaps instead of the Rubinstein he should have analysed the MacCutcheon.

I got my copy this morning and as a lifetime French player I could not wait for it. Unfortunately it will take until saturday to have a real close look at it and make a fair judgement. Here are some quite polemical and unfair remarks in advance:

For the first look, I´m really disappointed. Almost 50 pages of Rubinstein system are worthless for any dynamic and therefore true French player. To leave them blank for remarks would have been more useful.

30 more pages on the Tarrasch with 3....c5. Maybe Black´s best way to battle the Tarrasch, but inspiring?

Vitiguov promises a complete black repertoire but shows little Interest in providing us amateurs with one, especially when White chooses sidelines. His remark on 1.e4 e6 2.Nf3 d5 3.Nc3 d4 4.Nb5 is worth the be read:
"White has played 4. Nb5?, too. Fortunately this book is not an opening enzyclopedia and I do not feel obliged to analyze moves like that."

I had to read it several times and still can´t believe this kind of intolerable arrogance. Hell, what else should be his job as author of a repertoire book?

He´s equally disinterested in analysing the practical important exchange variation. He gives 4.Nf3 Bd6, and than only 5.c4 is analysed on overall 5 pages, while 5.Bd3 is worth only some lines. Maybe there is something useful in his analysis, but is this providing Black with a repertoire?

I have to stop here for today, but I hope and guess that other parts of the book are much better.

I ordered it two weeks ago from ChessDirect. I still haven't got it, but they told me it is en route from Russia as it is freshly published.

Niggeman and New in Chess have this in stock now.  If anyone has it yet, does he recommend the Winawer Poison Pawn?

Yes, 3.N\u1089?3 is my favorite reply to the French.  Always throws 'em into quite a tizzy.  But I have to admit that I wasn't familiar with 4.\u1089?3 after 3.Nd2 Be7.

I'm curious about his recommendations, but doubt I'll buy it.

For me it will largely depend on his choices after 3.Nc3 Bb4. If it's a general overview then it will be not for me. I already own Psachis' volume on it. If it specializes on say the Portisch Variation I will strongly consider it.

Yeah, it may be a matter of taste. At least in my experience, I have problems assimilating all of the important information in really large chess books.

Avrukh's d4 books have so much in them, that's it's difficult to decide which lines are the most important without messing around with a database at the same. Khalifman's series is the same way - there's just so much in there that it's hard to boil it down.

I think the Chess Stars Sicilian books are near perfect as far as length and format go for a repertoire book. If I could get them to write new 1. e4 books that are shorter than Khalifman's and in the format of these books, my life would be complete!

Not to say that I don't like the GM Rep books or similar titles- I think they're fantastic and I'm probably going to buy all of them, they're just tough. Great for a CC player like me though, harder to implement for OTB though.

It's unclear to me that the page count is indicative. I mean, unless it's 5 pages or something, in which you'd have a problem. Chess Stars books tend to be quite dense, with less commentary then normal. I'd wait to see if it doesn't fulfill your needs. The Easiest Sicilian is a fairly small book compared to Rogozenko's hefty Svesh tome, but The Easiest Sicilian is one of my favorite books!

Rogozenko's book is the best opening book I've seen! I haven't seen the Easiest Sicilian, though. I've come to the conclusion that the Sveshnikov is not for me.

I like the Safest Sicilian quite much. (I have both editions.) I would have preferred that book to have more pages. Twice the size would have been nice. For instance, I would have liked to see some analysis after the d5 breaks in the hedgehog positions. Now it's just d5= and not much more.

On second thoughts, I will take a closer look at Vitugov's book when I get the chance.  It's not the page count that turned me off but his choice of coverage. I'm curious about his recommendations, but doubt I'll buy it.
