For blitz or rapid play online I love to play the Polugaevsky variation. Most White players have no idea how to handle it and so far have about an 80% success rate with it.

Objectively speaking White probably does retain a slight edge, but it certainly has not been refuted. This slight edge is probably why you don't see it at GM level too often, but I think it is a good practical try and can lead to interesting play.

It's maybe naïve  but look at the variation : 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6 6.Bg5 e6 7.f4 b5 8.e5 dxe 9.fxe Qc7 10.exf6 Qe5+ 11.Be2 Qxg5 12.Qd3 Qxf6 13.Rf1 Qe5 14.Td1 White has six developped pieces against one for only one pawn.

I used to play this line for a small while. Every time I played ..b5 I think my hands used to shake and my heart rate sped up! Maybe I stopped playing it for the good of my health.
I think it is ok to play upto around 1800 as white needs to know how to make good use of initiative. Above 2000 I would say White would make good use of the extra tempos.

If you enjoy walking a tightrope above a waterfall you must by all means play the Polugaevsky. Most GM's don't.

Polugaevsky's 7..b5 in the Najdorf

I am playing the Najdorf and have always played a sideline agasint the 6.Bg5 variation that is probably not any good. I was thinking about playing the poison pawn, mainly because it looks interesting however one of my friends reminded me that Lev Polugaevsky use to play 7..b5. I do not know much about this variation. I have looked up a bunch of games and the positions are nuts.  I have noticed that this variation is practically untouched by GM's in the past 5 years.  Anyone have an idea as to why this is or have an idea of what the best thing white has to play against this variation?
