Actually White should just play 1. e4 e5 ; 2. f4 ef ; 3. Bc4 d6 ?! 4. Ktc3 (4.d4 !?) Ktf6; 5. d4 Bg4 ; 6. Bxf4 probably followed by Qd3 later.

You seem to have played Nf3 in your mind.

None taken - I totally appreciate your honest and friendly post.  I am new to it, and I need to know the ins and outs.  I have been struggling for a long time to find something that I was truly happy with with the White pieces, and I think I can have a lot of enjoyment out of the Bishop's Gambit.  So, any good pointers are taken to the bank - I won't be trying Qe2 next time!  Smiley

Thanks!  I am still new to the opening, so I am just beginning to learn the ins and outs.  I wouldn't have guessed that Qd3 was thematic, with my lack of experience in that opening.  And you are right - I did have to redeploy qd1-e2-d3 early anyway.  Thanks for the strong pointer!

No disrespect intended, I hope you understand.

1. e4 e5 2. f4 exf 3. Bc4 d6? 4. Nc3 Nf6 5. Qe2?

5.Qe2 is weak.  If you're thinking seriously about a move like that, you need to play a lot more chess and worry less about preparing openings until you understand more.  You're down a pawn and who says e2 is the right place for your queen, you know?  You can't afford to potz around with inefficient moves like that.

5.d4! and if 5...Bg4 then 6.Qd3, which is a thematic queen deployment in the KG.  Beyond that, 3...d6? is weak.  3...Nf6, 3...Nc6 and 3...d5 are all more challenging.  The propensity of lower-rated players to play moves like 3...d6 is what makes the KG so strong at that level, but you have to know how to play it.

On 3...Nc6, do you simply plan the Bb3 retreat?  It seems reasonable to me...

3...d6 is generally not considered a problem. It's 3...Nc6 that gives me headaches.

Okay, I have really been working with the Bishop's Gambit recently, and I think I am satisfied with the positions I am getting.  I am still new at the opening, and I am using Fritz to analyze my ideas, but I wondered if anyone might have some human advice for me, or for anyone else who plays these positions.  One spot in particular is my early Qe2 on move 5 - Fritz also recommends Nf3!?...Does anyone have any suggestions?  I have attached a PGN, but here are the moves as well.

1. e4 e5 2. f4 exf 3. Bc4 d6 4. Nc3 Nf6 5. Qe2 Bg4 6. Nf3 Be7 7. d4 Nc6 8. Qd3 0-0 9. Bxf4 Nb4 10. Qe2 d5 11. exd Bf5 12. Rc1 Ng4 13. a3 Re8 14. 0-0 Bd6 15. Qd2 Bxf4 16. Qxf4 Na6 17. Qxf5 Ne3 18. Qd3 Nxf1 19. Rxf1 c6 20. Ng5 g6 21. dxc Kg7 22. Rxf7+ Kh6 23. Rxh7+ Kxg5 24. Qg3+ Kf6 25. Nd5+ Ke6 26.  Qe5#

The time limits were only 4mins+4 secs.
