I don't understand you. If you mean 6.Nf3 Bb4 7.Bc4 Nxe4 8.0-0 Nxc3 9.bxc3 Bd6 I can inform you that White will just play 10.Qxd6. My instinct tells me that the Easy Sicilian does not devote much analysis to this.

I deesagree from the start white must have slightly diffiicult position than black so sorry for my last comment actually in the easiest sicillian book it gives Nxc3 bxN Fd6 with some ecxellent analysis Cheesy

I had a discussion on this very subject in another thread, and I stated that Black gains an advantage based on Bosch-Rogers, 1999. I've done a bit more research on the line since making that statement, and 11.Re1 (mentioned in the aforementioned thread by MNb) is just good enough to equalise.

Checked with Rogosenko and he basically just says that 7 Bc4 is 'obviously' forced as 7 Bd3 d5 or 7 Bg5 h6 etc are good (great iirc) for black Smiley

Then some more analysis on 7 Bc4.

I happen to own that book. The section on the Sveshnikov was written by Ligterink. He claims an edge indeed based on Ortega-Zinn, Berlin 1968 where he offers the improvement 12.Qe2.
It seems that 6.Nf3 is a decent option indeed if White wants to avoid cutting edge theory. Some lines somewhat resemble the Italian Game.

Bc4 looks much more natural/critical indeed.  Incidentally I recall that it was thought to lead to lead to an edge for White in that Sicilian book authored by Ligterink and Baljon in about 1980.

After 10.bxc3 0-0 11.0-0 Re8 12.Ng5 (12.Be4 Nf6 and White already has to concede the pair of bishops) Nf6 13.Qe2 Bg4 Black is fine; his light pieces are as active as White's. Preserving that activity is Black's priority; looking for exchanging a pair of bishops is very welcome. For this reason 11...Bg4 can't be bad either.

I played ..Bxc3 last night. I thought about lines with ..Bg4 in the game (perhaps same position as you state) but was worried about Bxh7/Ng5+/Qxg4.
It seemed strategically good, but wanted as much play against my weaker opponent as possible. I played (mistakenly) ..f6 rather than the suggested ..h6.

I would probably suggest to have a tight grip over the position with playing.
7.Bd3-Bc3!? 8.bc3-h6!(Stopping any ideas related to Bg5)9.0-0(Please note that Ba3 fails Qa5)-O-0 followed by d6,Qc7,Nd7,Nc5,b6  and pressure along c-file whereas white doesnt seem to have any big counterplay

In more than 500 games White has scored a miserable 28% after 6.Nf3 Bb4 7.Bd3. The choice of the stronger players (ELO 2200+) has been 9...Bxc3, arguing that White's ruined pawn structure is not compensated by his pair of bishops. Moreover there is Black's better central control. In fact I wonder what more Black can ask after just 10 superficially reasonable moves by White!
After 10.bxc3 0-0 11.0-0 Re8 12.Ng5 (12.Be4 Nf6 and White already has to concede the pair of bishops) Nf6 13.Qe2 Bg4 Black is fine; his light pieces are as active as White's. No reason to expect white to be worse after 6 Nf3. Harmless maybe but its not that silly a move!

At least this isn't such a dead position. Potentially nice black central majority etc. Actually whites position does feel slightly 'pointless' while black has stuff like f5,e4 etc to line up. But he's still very solid.

Bishops do feel worth keeping. o-o rather than either capture on c3 maybe worth a look.

Sveshnikov - 6.Nf3: best way to play Black?

Hi,

I have twice now faced 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 e5 6.Nf3

The games continued 6..Bb4 7.Bd3 d5 8.exd5 Nxd5 9.Bd2

In one game I played 9..Nxc3 and in the other 9..Bxc3.
I didn't really like conceding the Bishop pair, but then again keeping the Bishops slows development.

I'm sure Black is fine after both, but I feel Black should be getting more.

Is there a preference over these 2 moves or is there a better way to go earlier on?
