Aha yes, I think I looked at Re8 before, it's quite an interesting idea and I certainly agree with the line given that Black should be alright. I think more dangerous tries are 17. f4 and 17.b4 On 17.f4, Black is probably alright with some precision: 17.. Bxd5 Nxd5 Nc6 looks playable e.g. Nxf6 Bxf6 f5 d5 I believe should give Black sufficient counterplay in the centre. However I'm not sure yet what Black should try on 17.b4 (though the position is playable.)

Another consideration for Black in this line is 16.. Qd7!? Against wet moves, I think Black can just continue with Bd8, looking to exchange on d5 and eventually bring the bishop to b6. So probably 17.f4 is critical and now I think the way to go is the computer inspired 17..Bxd5 Nxd5 Ne6 fxe5 dxe5 Bxb5 (not forced but on other moves, Black can always resort to playing Nxd5 exd5 Nf4 with good chances to hold an opposite coloured bishop position) Qxb5 Nxe7+ Kh8 Rxf6 gxf6 with a fascinating position. I think the assesment may well be unclear although it'd require a lot of analysis!  Grin

In any case, certainly some ideas to play around with, Let me know if you have any thoughts on the lines! Smiley

Thanks,

James

Hi James,

Thanks for your interest! This is actually an interesting development. In my manuscript, I didn't believe this line was anything particularly noteworthy based on quite a few games, e.g. Naiditsch - Hracek, European Champs 2010 and Bacrot - Ikonnikov, Bundesliga 2009. Upon looking at it, 13.a3 seems to be an improvement, but all is not lost.

For instance, the line 13...Nc6 14.Ned5 Nd4!? is probably about equal, and intuition tells me this is the way to go. Maybe White has the tiniest of nibbles, e.g. 15.Bd3 Rb8 16.Be3 Re8!? 17.Qd2, but I think 17...Nxd5! 18.Nxd5 Nf5! is about equal.

I tried this line out, and my computer thinks 19.Nxe7+ Nxe7 20.a4 is best, but Black gets in 20...d5! 21.exd5 Qxd5 22.axb5 axb5, when he looks mostly okay.

Hey,

Am new to these forums.. particularly interested in this thread as I'm very fond of the kalashnikov and have researched some of the mentioned lines for my own use..

Tony- I imagine you've probably already found some effective solutions but I wanted to mention one of the lines that I've had trouble trying to find equality in:

6. Nc3 a6 Na3 Be7 Nc4 b5 Ne3 Nf6 Bd3!? (I think this is a better try then g3) 0-0 0-0.. Here of course things deviate but I haven't yet found a convincing solution.. Some tries: 11.. Rb8 a4 b4 Ncd5 Nxd5 Nxd5 Bg5 for a while seemed to me like a reasonable way to equalise.. however I think Black has problems after the novelty [/b] Bxg5 Qxg5 a5! [/b] Alternatively.. 11.. Nb4 Be2 Be6 (Bb7 a3 Nc6 Nf5 is clearly decent for White) a3 Nc6 Ned5 and it seems to me that White is better. Radjabov has tried in a blitz game 11.. Be6 but after [/b] a4 b4 Ncd5 a5 (Nd7 Bd2 a5 c3 looks like an edge) c3 [/b] and again I think White is on top.

I'd be very interested to see if there's some improvements for Black somewhere in these lines as generally the Be7 complex seems quite healthy!

Thanks,

James

1.e4 has a hard time against Petroff, RL-Berlin and now has to deal with the "Killer Sicilian" - 1.e4?!

The older, the better - over 2200 and still rising.

I'm eager to know if Tony has found a good way of meeting f4 in the following line?

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 e5 5. Nb5 d6 6. c4 Be7 7. N1c3 a6 8. Na3
f5 9. Bd3 f4 10. g3 Nf6 11. gxf4 exf4 12. Bxf4 O-O 13. Bg3 Ng4 14. f4!
Huh

The 64-dollar question is, by the twelfth of August will either of the moderators have amended the thread's title? Undecided

The first half of this DVD, showing the ideas behind the opening, is extremely well done. Bojkov's presentational style is engaging and his observations are informative and instructive. Somewhat less impressive, though, is the theoretical section, in which a Kalashnikov repertoire is suggested for Black. Against 6 N1c3 a6 7 Na3, Bojkov recommends 7 …b5 8 Nd5 Nge7 9 c4 Nd4 (as opposed to the 7...Be7 lines). The problem from a practical perspective is that, in one of the video sections, several variations presented as part of the repertoire lead to major piece endings in which Black is a pawn down, albeit with good drawing chances. For a professional player, this may be acceptable, but I'm not sure many amateurs will want to play into lines culminating in an uphill struggle in an ending with a material disadvantage. At the conclusion of the video section in which he shows this line, Bojkov actually apologises that he's been unable to come up with anything better, so he is aware that this isn't really desirable from the point of view of his intended audience. These lines do put me off this part of his repertoire, I have to say.

In spite of this reservation, I still feel that the DVD is good value because of Bojkov's lucid and illuminating explanations, and is a worthwhile acquisition if you're interested in the Kalashnikov. You might want to do a bit of independent work in constructing a repertoire, though.

My coverage is 99% done, and will certainly be updated to quickly reflect what Bojkov has to say.

Downloaded mine last night, very good so far, DVD's split into 2 parts, first part goes through ideas and historical games in the line, haven't got to 2nd part yet but that is the theory part. I only used to play on queenside when I played Kalashnikov after it being recommended in the ICS course, however apparently you can play a kingside assault, which Bojkov's compares as a favourable King's Indian type pawn storm, he also has 5 clips at end of first part dedicated to the Kalashnikov endings, havent yet watched them though. I really liked his Na6 King's Indian DVD and after watching first 4 clips this is definitely to the same standard and it's clear he's done his research and presents very well, did make a slight error in first clip but corrected himself. Hope Tony uses this as a source in his book and there's definitely a lot of great ideas in this DVD.
