Good point dom.

We could all improve how we use google.

Here are advanced search tips, directly from google:

Tip (for what you type in search window,..,google search): search with "-Re" and "-Reply" to get only first post

Example:  "C02 -Re -Reply" or "C00 C19 -Re -Reply"

Jesse, I really like the google search function. I don't see the multiple references to a single thread as a problem at all. If a line is talked about quite a bit in a single thread, chances are, there's gonna be some excellent analysis in that thread.

This is a fantastic improvement over the old search function!

Maybe Tony sees some configuration options in the admin panel...

Only draw back i'm seeing with the google search is that it returns all posts, several within a single thread. Still useful if one skims the headings of google's search results.

Disallowing google from indexing individual posts is counter-productive. Not sure if there's a good solution.

Btw, the oldfangled search allows for a the first 15 hits. Is there a way to search for the next 15 hits? Or do I just celebrate that we now have the google search function that works so much better?

ha!, an improvement Wink

google's much faster than yabb's "This post was made in the last... 'all posts'" - which seems either broken or veeerrrrryyyy slow.

OK, it's done and seems to work!
If you click on the 'Search' tab at the top of the page you still get the standard YaBB search I suppose?
Looks like the best of both worlds!
Thanks again Jesse! Wink

Grep thinks it's in /cgi-bin/yabb2/Sources/Subs.pl

If you have a customized version and want me to make the edit, send me your file.

The current search box, which appears on all pages, does not give good results.

To keep the same search box, but use google for the searching, replace this code block

Code
Select All
		<form action="http://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?action=search2" method="post">
		<input type="hidden" name="searchtype" value="allwords" />
		<input type="hidden" name="userkind" value="any" />
		<input type="hidden" name="subfield" value="on" />
		<input type="hidden" name="msgfield" value="on" />
		<input type="hidden" name="age" value="31" />
		<input type="hidden" name="numberreturned" value="15" />
		<input type="hidden" name="oneperthread" value="1" />
		<input type="hidden" name="searchboards" value="!all" />
		<input type="text" name="search" size="16" style="font-size: 11px; vertical-align: middle;" />
		<input type="image" src="http://www.chesspub.com/yabbfiles/Templates/Forum/default/search.gif" style="border: 0; background-color: transparent; margin-right: 5px; vertical-align: middle;" />
		<input type="hidden" name="formsession" value="426964727251746321476E73746C6B607271646F2C6C64786473010" /></form>

with the following

Code
Select All
<form method="get" action="http://www.google.com/search">
		<input type="text" name="q" maxlength="255" size="16" style="font-size: 11px; vertical-align: middle;" />
		<input type="image" src="http://www.chesspub.com/yabbfiles/Templates/Forum/default/search.gif"
		style="border: 0; background-color: transparent; margin-right: 5px; vertical-align: middle;" />
		<input style="display:none;" type="checkbox"  name="sitesearch" value="chesspub.com" checked />
	</form>

formatting stays exactly the same. tested and working on opera.

Google has a canned solution - you could edit this to be a drop in replacement for the current 'magnifying glass' search box:

Code
Select All
<form method="get" action="http://www.google.com/search">

<input type="text"   name="q" size="25"
 maxlength="255" value="" />
<input type="submit" value="Search chesspub.com with Google" />
<input style="display:none;" type="checkbox"  name="sitesearch"
 value="chesspub.com" checked />
</form>

tags could work well IF the tags were accurate and complete - which is hopeful at best.

That might work decent enough but what you really should be typing to only get results from this forum is "site:chesspub.com (fill in chess idea)"

Yes, that's great,  Smiley so I'm going to put in big, bright
letters so that everyone notices!!

Google code:

site:chesspub.com  (fill in chess question)

For example: site:chesspub.com eBook,
or site:chesspub.com London System

I like Taljechin's idea with a google search based on website and first moves leading to one specific position/variation.

I can do the work for threads I created in the French forum (I can edit the first post in the thread) but I need to be sure what must be done....

Is it ok for:

- first post in every thread with various first moves leading to positions/variations topic of the thread

- post with "first moves: ..." lines

- post with fen tag for position after first moves
?

I have been typing "chesspub (fill in chess idea)" on google search now.  That was a great idea, thanks so much for sharing that.

I guess the next big step would be either to put a footnote under the current search engine on how to use Google successfully for ChessPub searches, or to simply put a Google search on the page.  I don't know how much work that involves, and I apologize if that sounds simpler than it might be.
