In fact, I like Be7 for black for the reasons you gave. I do not have time now but later I'm going to see if I can dig out some top level games to look at with this move.

No I don't think so (on 16. ... Qc7) it depends how you want to battle. I would rather let White expand on the Q-side if wishes so and go for the K-side with f5 and possibly later on g5-g4. With such a plan Bg5 gets in the way. I also think the Bishop is still useful at e7 covering indirectly the c5 pawn break..

But the position is rich and may be a good idea to experiment a bit with different plans if you are planning to play this as White.

If you are planning to play this as Black it may not be worth the time invested (esp. if you are a club player of average strength as of yet - otherwise I think the variation is in a way topical, i.e. to be expected on the board).

Black could of course avoid 16...Bg5 and play 16...Qc7 17.c4

When I see this move I realise I do not really understand 16...Bg5 at all. Is there something principally wrong with 16...Qc7?

Ok let's retract a few moves. I am curious to find out why 14...Bg5 is never played and why 14...Nd7 is prefered.

Karjakin played 15.Bxg5 Qxg5 16.a5 Nd7 17.Ra4 Nf6 18.Bc4 Qh5 19.Rxb4 Nxd5 20.g3 Qh3 (the point of Qh4 rather than Qf4) 21.Rxb7 Ne3 22.Qe2 Nxc4 23.Rd1 Nxb2 24.Rxd6 Rc8 25.Kg1 Nc4 26.Rxa6 Rd8 and black was much better, if not winning.

Much simpler and better I think is 15.Bxg5 Qxg5 16.Na5 Bc8 17.Qe1 Qe3 18.Bd3 Qxe1  [18...Qc5 19.Nb3 Qc7 20.Qxb4] 19.Rxe1 after Nc4 white has an edge.

Black should play 16...Ra7 but white is still slightly better 17.Nc4 Ba8 18.a5 followed by Ra4

Hello,

I have been researching the following position arising in the Najdorf Be2-e5 after:

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 a6 6. Be2 e5 7. Nb3 Be7 8. O-O O-O 9. Kh1 b6 10. Be3 Bb7 11. f3 b5 12. a4 b4 13. Nd5 Nxd5 14. exd5 Nd7 15. c3 bxc3 16. bxc3 Bg5 17. Bf2

* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
*

I am of course aware that this variation is far from topical nowadays yet it is unfortunate that there is no coverage of it in the theory section on this site. Looking through games does not give me a good idea of what is theory.

As such I would greatly appreciate if some kind member on chesspub could give a quick review of this position for me, explaining the development of this position.

Thanks a thousand!
