I think it's great to see Simon Williams showing that producing innovative and quality chess instructional material is more than some of the 'run of the mill' stuff we have seen from more estabilished sources.

Sadly, every time I've tried to play the French it's ended in disaster!

Just ordered mine -  Smiley
Will post an honest review, once received and viewed

It is our wedding anniversary on Saturday (28th) so if the DVD drops through the letterbox I will have to explain that Nanny Mcphee was sold out and this was the only alternative  Grin

Thanks

I like the CB DVDs by Müller and Bologan. I guess they could be a bit better production wise, but I focus more on the chess than camera angles, et c.

Don't check me with no lightweight stuff.

I agree with TalJechin in that there is little in the way of creative imagination in the production of chess DVDs. Even when the actual chess content is good, the presentation is bland and the graphics stale. I'll give you a specific example of what I'm talking about. The Chessbase DVD, The French Defense, presented by Ari Ziegler. The information was instructive, but Ari Ziegler's presentation of it was somber and lifeless. The clacking keyboard was more animated than he was!
And for one that is just gawd-awful-bad, check out Foxy Opening's, The Blumenfeld Gambit with Andrew Martin.
Simon Williams seems to understand this and is trying to breakout into new territory by juicing up the graphics and giving us a presenter with an actual personality.

I got an impression that you are personally involved. Did you received free dvd or maybe just like him?
Half of the screen is a chessboard wheareas the other half is S.Williams sitting as did Roman.
Is it possibility, one can see only a chessboard?
Why all of sudden everybody accuses me of being a competitor? I am not.
Just because I do not praise his work?
And one more issue: listening and at the same time looking at Fritz or any other good engine' evaluation is very helpful. You just cannot say you are indifferent.
One said "The fact that we have had to wait a decent length of time for Williams' products testifies to the fact that a certain amount of care was put into making them."  a decent length of time does not guarantee anything. to try does not always means to achieve.  It's for the sake of argument)And at the end - I believe - his analysis is very good, he chose proper lines, but I dislike interface.
I have put that, and all of sudden as if it was one man, started to accuse me of being a competitor...

To: TalJechin which one is mediocre from ChessBase?

All the ones I've seen actually, except one with Kramnik but that one was more like an interview than a lecture...

Though I was actually talking about how you make possibly the best medium mediocre.

It should be obvious that you can do so much more with a camera and dvd-burner, than put a titled player in front of the camera and have him sweat it out in the spotlights for a few hours, slap it on a dvd and sell it.

If you really can't see any way to improve that, you should start a thread here and ask for suggestions from the audience/buyers...

Other things that I have noticed about other products are the lack of editing that takes place - they normally run it in one take. The presenter can occasionally be found apologising and going back to a certain position because he has made a mistake.

Exactly, most free youtube videos on chess feature better edited videos on chess than CB's - it's both strange and pathetic that a company with so much resources can't produce better quality and content than that. Instead of backstabbing their competitors they should make a real effort to take the lead in Chess DVDs, there are so many things that can be added to make it the best medium for chess instead of mediocre.

I think it's pretty clear that you work for one of the other chess publications out there

By the way, Drucker (with an umlaut) means "printer" in German.

Williams' discussion of his products was done openly, earnestly, and in his own name. We're fortunate to have titled authors frequenting this site, and their posts about their own work are not just so much propaganda, even if the authors stay upbeat about their products.

Drucker mentioned Roman twice in discussing Williams' DVDs (of course, that was just about the interface  Wink), but I wouldn't  associate Williams with Roman at all. The fact that we have had to wait a decent length of time for Williams' products testifies to the fact that a certain amount of care was put into making them.

drucker, competition is good for the customers .....yes and I'm sure Williams' appreciates any constructive criticism but what is unacceptable is making negative comments towards him and his dvds because you view them as competition. I think it's pretty clear that you work for one of the other chess publications out there and to be honest, I think it's a a pity that you've felt the need to come on here and attack this guy's work. Williams' has taken a dignified approach to all of this, something which he should be commended for. Simon... I'm looking forward to the next dvd and I hope that drucker won't discourage you from making future ones! Smiley
