Some remarks about Tzermiadianos 's book....

-  Chapter seventeen A)

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nd2 Nf6 4.e5 Nfd7 5.Bd3 c5 6.c3 Nc6 7.Ne2 cxd4 8.cxd4 Qb6 9.Nf3 Bb4+ 10.Bd2 oo 11.oo

11...Bxd2 12.Qxd2 f6 13.exf6 Nxf6 (instead of Rxf6 in the book) 14.Nf4 g6

and here is the "novelty" of Rybka 4 book: 15.Bb1

Psakhis "Nd2" book analyzed 15.Ne2. One game with this line is Smaguine-Glek,Odessa 1989

14...Rh8 (Hollis-Nicolai,Hastings 1964) was given by Watson and Psakhis gave after 17.Ne2! (Anka-Berkes,Pecs 1998)

After 14.Nf4  I suggest 14..Qb4 (willingly proposing a queen exchange because Black can win an outpost on e4)
15.Qe3 Qd6 (Black has recoered control of the most important f4 square) 16.g3 Ng4 17.Ng5 g6 and White cannot lose
control of f4 because of the powerful Rxf4 then 18.Qf3 Nf6=

-  Chapter nineteen A) d)

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nd2 Nf6 4.e5 Nfd7 5.Bd3 c5 6.c3 Nc6 7.Ne2 cxd4 8.cxd4 f6 9.exf6 Nxf6 10.Nf3 Bd6 11.oo oo 12.Bf4 Bxf4 13.Nxf4

13...Qc7 14.g3 Qb6!? 15.b3 Bd7! (instead of 15...Rh8 ) with one typical trick for Black in some variations: 16.Rc1 Rae8 17.Re1 Nxd4!?
18.Nxd4 e5 (Celis-Rodriguez,Mar del Plata 1994) 19.Nxd5!? Nxd5 20.Bc4 exd4 21.Bxd5+ Kh8 22.Rxe8 Rxe8 23.Qf3! Qb5 24.a4 Qb4 25.Rd1 Bh3=

or 23...Bh3 24.Qh5 (24.Qf7 Qd8 25.Bc4 h6 26.Rd1 Re7 27.Qh5 Qd7 28.Bd3 Qg4=) Qb5

another good idea for Black is: 17...Re7 18.Bb1 g5! 19.Rxc6 Qxc6 (instead of 19..bxc6 Garcia, Silvino-Lopez, Josep M Capablanca mem 2004 Premier I
1-0 Havana CUB Round 2)

- Chapter nineteen C)

13...Ne4 14.g3 Qb6 15.Re1 g5! (instead of 15...Qxb2) and here White has not the Ng2 move !? 16.Ng2? Nxf2! because of
the good plac of Black queen. I prefer for White the older line given by Emms in excellent book about Tarrasch or
McDonald&Harley: 14.Qc1 Ng5 15.Nxg5 Qxg5

- Chapter twenty

11...Qc7 12.Bg5 oo 13.Rc1

13...Kh8 14.Nc3 Qf7!? (instead of 14...a6). I feel position after 13...Rh8 needs more analysis.

- Chapter twenty B)

13...h6 14.Bh4 Nh5 15.Bg6 Rxf3 16.gxf3 Bxh2+ 17.Kg2 Nf4+ 18.Nxf4 Bxf4 19.g3 Bd7 20.Rh1 Qd6! (instead of 20...Rf8)
est donne par Watson: Trippe-Giulotto,ICCF email 2007 (Watson). I like the Qd6 idea which occurs in similar line
with an early Qc2)

14...Qb6 15.Nh4 Nf6 16.Nh5 Ne4 17.Bxe4 dxe4 18.Bh6 gxh6 19.Qg4+ Kf7 Jobava-Larino Nieto,Torrelavega 2007 (Moskalenko)
20.Qxe4 Nxd4! (instead of 20...Ne7?)

15.Qc2 Rxf3! (instead of 15..h6) 16.Bxh7+ Kh8 17.gxf3 Nxd4 18.Qg6 Nxf3+ 19.Kg2 (19.Kh1 Qxb2 20.Qh5 Nxg5 21.Bf5+ Nh6=)
19..Qxb2 20.Qh5 Nxg5 21.Bf5+ Nh6 22.Qe8=

- chapter twenty D)

13...Bd7 14.Re1 h6!? was given by Watson

15.Bb1 Qb6 (instead of 15...Qb8)

- chapter twenty E)

13...Nh5 14.Bh4 Rxf3 15.gxf3 Bxh2+ 16.Kg2 Bf4 17.Rc3 Qf7 (instead of 17..e5)

14.Bb1 Nf4 (instead of 14...g6)

Hmm seems like this book can cause some problems for the second player. Its probably adviceable to study it as black.

There's an old thread on this book if you haven't read it already:

http://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1198973747/

Also John Watson gave a detailed review last year:

http://www.chess.co.uk/twic/jwat92.html

The book seems to generally have excellent reviews for its analytical depth.

I suppose the answer to the question is that it depends on the paper quality. Wink Put differently, how good are the recommendations for white in this book?

Quote:
In How to Beat the French Defence, Andreas Tzermiadianos meets this difficult challenge head on. He advocates his favourite weapon against the French – the Tarrasch Variation – and reveals an abundance of opening ideas and novelties, providing the reader with a complete repertoire which is aimed at posing Black serious problems.

In non-orderly fashion I have a few random questions about this book.

Has anyone had any of the recommendations in the book played against them? Is it still up to date or have there been any improvements for black that you know? Can white players who use this book be easily identified? What are the weak points in the repertoire that is recommended? In sum, does it do what the title says and do you have any general thoughts about this book?
