Congratulations for taking up the gaunlet and scoring a well deserved point! I was aware of this line ever since the very first game Giri-Hillarp Persson (which I immediately checked against the Avrukh repertoire at this time). So what can I say? I always considered this line dubious because of your continuation which is what computers support too.

On the other hand Tiger Hillarp Persson was rewarded for his courageous invention when his opponents didn't dare to accept the gambit, and he scored two victories against strong opponents with this line.

Hello slav experts,

I recently played white in a CC game starting with

1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.e3 Bf5 5.Nc3 e6 6.Nh4 Be4 7.f3 Bg6 8.Qb3

and was suprised by 8. ... b5 ?!

I didn't (and still don't) understand the idea behind this move, continued with

8...b5 9.cxb5 c5 !? 10.Be2

and was simply a pawn up. I won the game 40 moves later -ironically, because black had to give a piece for this white extra-pwan....

Could somebody explain this strange 8.... b5 move (perhaps in combination with 9.... c5) ? What is black's idea ?
