Tony's book was my first introduction to opening literature and it forms the beginnings of my own play.  I really do not use it anymore, but if you want to play the English, Tony's introduction to White's c4,d3,e4 is essential stuff.  The chapters where white launches a kingside attack have scored me many easy victories with the exception of black meeting f4 with f5.  These games are much more even (probably because these opponents are much more prepared.)

Tony, what would you recommend for a similar coverage of the Sicilian as Dynamic English does for white?

I am still hopeful that Tony someday will consider an update. The Dynamic english should have been a big seller also. Marins books are wonderful no doubt about that. But I still find Kostens book much easier to approach and it is not that demanding as Marins books are. The Dynamic english was and is a very popular book and it has played a great role in making the english opening popular. Go on Tony I am sure you can spice up the Dynamic english a lot. Especially with instruments like Rybka and Ippolito and other chess engines.

BTW, this seems to me to be a completely wrong thread (place) in this forum to discuss the delivery channels of qualitychess books. Yet one final remark: have a look at what the editor Aagaard writes at http://www.qualitychess.co.uk/docs/13/faq/

You can get it directly from Quality Chess (they have the hardcover too if you want it). Or from www.bookdepository.com (or its ...co.uk brother - same site, in effect) with free delivery worldwide.

I keep hearing about Marin's "three volume set" yet I've only seen two of them.  Are all three completed, or is the third yet to come?

Along the same lines, I have his English Volume 1 (c4 e5) and have been waiting on Amazon for months for English (GM Repertoire 5) - Volume 3, is there someplace else I can get this?

Thanks everyone.

OFWAK 3A 2nd Edition, whenever Khalifman gets around to it, will be devoted to a significant amount of Symmetrical English coverage.

As an objective observer I can state that you guys are not pushing the author quite hard enough to provide an updated edition... Shame on you !

I wouldn't call 8.Ne1 against the Rubinstein 'dubious' - it is not the strongest move, but I have a very good score with White, even against strong players.

Jonathan Carlstedt also recomends 8.Ne1 and gives it an exclamation mark (He says:"Thank you Tony!"). After 8...Bg4 he gives 9.Qb3 Qc8 10.Qa4 Bd7 11.Qc4 Bh3 12.b3 Bxg2 13.Kxg2 Qe6 14.Nf3 Be7 15.d3 with a slide edge.

Yes, that's true, but as the positions are closed the tempi shouldn't matter too much, and White will probably play a4 anyway. I think the main problem for White is that these positions are not easy to win, and pushing too hard (as in my game against Bricard) can often rebound.

All the lines in the Symmetrical where Black plays ...Bxc3 are double-edged, at best.

I used to think so too, but this line might be an exception. It should at least be better than the similar 5.e3 Bxc3 6.bxc3 b6 because White's a3 has less value than Black's b6.

So far Black scored well and the very few wins for White I found unconvincing. Here are the three games I gave a deeper look when I had to answer 5...b6 in a correspondence game last year.

[Event "TCh-FRA Top 16 Gp B"]
[Site "Montpellier FRA"]
[Date "2008.??.??"]
[White "Gurevich,M"]
[Black "Schlosser,P"]
[Result "1-0"]
[WhiteElo "2607"]
[BlackElo "2564"]
[ECO "A30"]
[Round "4"]

1. c4 c5 2. g3 g6 3. Bg2 Bg7 4. Nc3 Nc6 5. a3 b6 6. e3 Bxc3 7. bxc3 Bb7
8. e4 d6 9. d3 Qd7 10. Ne2 O-O-O 11. Nf4 e6 12. O-O Na5 13. Re1 Kb8 14. a4 h6
15. Re2 g5 16. Nh5 f5 17. exf5 Bxg2 18. Kxg2 exf5 19. Re1 Qf7 20. d4 Ne7 21. d5 Rhe8
22. h4 gxh4 23. Re6 Ng8 24. Qe2 Nxc4 25. Nf4 Ne5 26. a5 Qb7 27. axb6 axb6 28. c4 Rxe6

36. Bxd6+ Kc8 37. Qe4 1-0

Guru was a bit lucky IMO. I view 20.d4!? as an attempt to mix things up from a suspicious position.

[Event "Open"]

29. Rb1 Rc7 30. Nc2 Bd7 31. Bd1 1/2-1/2

This game really depressed me.

43. Be2 a4 44. Kg2 a3 45. Rh1 a2 46. Ra1 Nxc4 47. Bd1 Bxd1 48. Rxa2 Kd6 49. Ra8 Kxd5
50. f3 b5 51. Kf2 Nd6 52. g4 Rf7 0-1

White did not find a good plan and apparently he also failed to find something post mortem. In later games against Reeh (2003) and Andersson (2005) he chose the modest 7.dxc3.

I think the same. I still swear that Tony's book is one of the best opening books ever written, and deep down I still have a soft spot for it. For grasping the English quickly, it has no rival. It does have some theoretical problems, but if you really just want to play the English quickly, you can deal with and work out the kinks as they come along.

I'm not so sure I completely agree with Hehmer. For instance, the 6.b4 gambit was risky even when I wrote the book, but I have quite good practical results with it (I don't play it against 2700+ Russians!) All the lines in the Symmetrical where Black plays ...Bxc3 are double-edged, at best. I wouldn't call 8.Ne1 against the Rubinstein 'dubious' - it is not the strongest move, but I have a very good score with White, even against strong players.
Actually, I chose a lot of the variations in the book because I considered them to be practical lines that were likely to score well in OTB chess, not because they were objectively 'best', and I think that still applies.
The 5...Na6 line against the Keres that Klick mentions is indeed missing from the book but is not particularly good for Black, in my opinion.
I would say that the Reversed Dragon line is the biggest 'theoretical problem' in the book, myself, but obviously with a book this old lots of the variations have problems. Shocked
I would certainly recommend that you prefer Marin's book, or only use mine to get a quick understanding of the strategic aspects. Wink

Here are some of the problems with the Dynamic English repertoire I know of.

1.c4 e5 2.g3 Nf6 3.Bg2 c6 4.d4 cxd4 5.Qxd4 d5

Kosten recommends 6.cxd5 cxd5 7.Nf3 Nc6 8.Qa4 but after 8...Bc5 Black is fine. White should probably play 6.Nf3 to avoid this line. After 6...dxc4 both 7.Qxc4 and the pawn sacrifice 7.Qxd8+ are good.

1.c4 c5 2.g3 g6 3.Bg2 Bg7 4.Nc3 Nc6 5.a3 e6

The gambit 6.b4?! (better 6.Rb1) is in crisis: 6...Nxb4 7.axb4 cxb4 8.d4 bxc3 9.e3 Ne7 10.Ne2 d5 11.cxd5 Nxd5 12.Ba3 and now instead of 12...Bf8 (unclear) 12...Bd7 13.O-O Bb5! is good for Black, Domingo - Alekseev, Berlin 2006.

1.c4 c5 2.g3 g6 3.Bg2 Bg7 4.Nc3 Nc6 5.a3 d6 6.Rb1 a5 7.Nf3 e5 8.O-O Nge7 9.d3 O-O

Here Kosten's mainline is 10.Bg5 f6 11.Be3 Be6 12.Ne1 Qd7 13.Nc2 a4 14.b3 axb3 15.Rxb3 Andersson - Seirawan, Linares 1983. White won
a nice game but in later games Black scored very well from this position. I have more trust in 10.Ne1 and 10.Bg5 f6 11.Bd2.

1.c4 c5 2.g3 g6 3.Bg2 Bg7 4.Nc3 Nc6 5.a3 b6

Kosten recommends 6.e3 but then after 6...Bxc3! 7.bxc3 Black has the easier game with Bb7, d6, Qd7 and O-O-O and 7.dxc3 is nothing for White.

1.c4 c5 2.g3 Nf6 3.Bg2 d5 4.cxd5 Nxd5 5.Nc3 Nc7 6.Nf3 Nc6 7.O-O e5 8.Ne1

The line is dubious. The most dangerous moves in my opinion are 8...Bg4 and 8...h5. White should play something else, maybe 6.d3.

1.c4 b6 2.Nc3 Bb7 3.e4 e6 4.Nge2 Nf6 5.d3

Here Kosten writes that 5...c5 transposes to that chapter's mainline but that's not true. Black gets a very easy game after 6. g3 d5 7.exd5 exd5 8.Bg2 Qd7 9.O-O d4 =+/=. The latest example is Kastek - Rozentalis, Bad Wiessee 2009.

I used this book to learn the English and it`s good. However I didn`t  fancy some of the suggested lines against 1.c5..  and you have to look elsewhere for coverage of 1.c4 e5 2.g3 Nf6 3.Bg2 c6 4.d4 exd 5.Qxd Na6. Yet it is a good way to learn english ideas as it gives good strategic explanations to each chapter and the size is handy. I guess this is what you should be looking for if you want to start out with the english. You can supplement with Marin`s recent 3 volume tome on the english for more extensive and up to date coverage.

Hi, I recently got this book and will start working with it. I realize it's a highly regarded book but also a rather outdated book. Can anybody tell me what the biggest theoretical problems in the book are or if there is a resource about this you can point me towards?
