So I got Ftacnik's 1.d4 repertoire and I think it is perfect for what I want from it, which is to say I am a 1.e4 player who wants to start to learn 1.d4 lines.  It is a great overview with some simple suggestions and a good way to start to build a repertoire.  If you've played 1.d4 for years it's usefulness will be limited, but if you're just starting 1.d4 I would give it my full approval.

There's not only practical considerations such as what Paulsen suggested, but Watson credits the explosion of chess theory to ending dogmatism that declared some openings dead on arrival. Ideas such as ...g5 in the French, a6 in the Slav, Na6 in the King's Indian, all break the rigid orthodoxy (is there "flexible" orthodoxy?) of past generations.

This explosion of chess theory mostly coincides with the growth of computer analysis, but slightly predates it. Suba's influential book, Modern Chess Strategy, was written just before the advent of ubiquitous computer analysis.

I think it's less computers resurrecting openings than it is the reality that obtaining an advantage (especially in main line openings) isn't as feasible as it once was (if indeed possible at all), so the practical merit of openings becomes a bigger question. Whatever it takes to pose the opponent problems.

I think more chess openings are being seen as playable as computers find ways through initial dangers.

Just a few years ago, Watson stated the opposite conclusion, that there are more chess openings played at high levels today than at any time in the past.

And this comment comes about a week after Carlsen played a King's Gambit!

I must admit I find this statement puzzling, as well as what it has to do with your or Antillian's repertoire or the contents of a particular video.  Is there any doubt that Ftacnik could have chosen any number of other sets of variations which would have been equally good?

It is strikingly close  to my current 1. d4 repertoire. But I would not buy it since the idea of presenting a complete white 1. d4 repertoire in less than six hours is shockingly ludicrous.

Well, my repertoire is similar to Ftaknic´s suggestion ,too. It seems chess is worn out, because the relevent openings are getting fewer and fewer.

    According to Niggemann: Yes.

Thanks Alias for that. Would have thought 4.e3 v Nimzo. More old school.

    Hmm, v Benoni?

    http://www.chessbase.com/shop/product.asp?pid=516

    Running time: 5h 30 min
34 videos + intro and conclusions

    According to Niggemann:
    • 4.Qc2 Nimzo+4.g3 QID
    • 5.Nf3/6.h3 vs KID
    • 4.Bf4 vs Grünfeld
    • 3.Nf3/4.e3 vs slav
    • 4.e3 vs semislav
    • 3.Nf3 vs QGA
    • 3.Nc3 vs Chigorin
    • 4.Nf3 vs Volga gambit

Obviously a list that gives a few answers but also many remaining questions unanswered.
