I agree, though I think 4...d5 is probably the more accurate move-order as 4...Bb4+ 5.Nc3 d5 gives White the additional 6.exd5 Qxd5 7.a3 possibility (line A12).

Thinking about it, the suggestions of TN and Micawber are also relevant to the theory of 3.c3 Ne7 (as one critical continuation is 4.cxd4 d5 5.e5, which may transpose after a quick ...Nbc6, and ...Bb4+, Nc3).

@TN/Jediknight
on the line
1.e4,e5 2.d4,cxd 3.c3,Nc6 4.cxd4,Bb4 5.Nc3,d5
6.e5,Nge7 (6...f6!? is interesting as well)
7.Nf3
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
*

The line discussed went.
7.Nf3,0-0  (i will argue at the end of my post that this move-order is maybe not optimal and Black should perhaps opt for 7....Bg4!

line A
8.Bd3 (TN), f6!
9.0-0
               (9.exf6,Rxf is reasonable for Black) ,
9........  fxe           (9...0-0?! 10.Bxh7, Kxh7? (better 10...Kh8) 11.Ng5 +/-
10.Nxe5,              (The sac 10.Bxh7 does not work)
10........., Bf5=

line B
8.Be2,Bg4      (8....f6 comes into consideration as well)
9.0-0, Nf5=   (Jediknight; Actually played in Leisebein-Ratzman, corr., 2001)
This game went:
10.Ng5!?,Bxe2 11.Nxe2,Qd7 12.Qd3,Be7
13.Qd2,Bxg5 14.Bxg5
And now the game went 14....Rfe8 15.Rac1+/=
Black should 14...Rae8= instead, preparing f6!

But this is not everything that can be said:
After
7.Nf3, Bg4! (iso 7....0-0) 8.Be2 (8.Bd3,Nxd4! -/+),0-0
there is a transposition to line B.

In line A11, White should play 8.Bd3! (the bishop is more actively placed here, and ...Bg4 loses material to Bh7) when neither 8...Bf5 9.0-0 Bd3 10.Qd3 nor 8...Nf5 9.a3! Ba5 10.Be3 suffice for equality.

On a similar note, I recall one occasion when I fancied giving the 3.c3 dxc3 4.Nxc3 move-order a shot in some online blitz games, and came up against the intriguing 3...Nc6!?, encouraging 4.Nf3.   I think I continued 4.cxd4 and Black subsequently played sub-optimally, but if Black plays accurately I doubt that White gets any advantage at all despite the pawn centre.

Some sample lines:

A) 4...Bb4+ 5.Nc3

A1) 5...d5

A11) 6.e5 Nge7 7.Nf3 0-0 8.Be2 Bg4 9.0-0 Nf5 with approximate equality,
A12) 6.exd5 Qxd5 7.a3 (instead 7.Nf3 Bg4 = and 7.Be3 Nf6 = transpose to regular 3...d5 lines) 7...Bxc3+ 8.bxc3 Nf6 9.Nf3 Bg4 10.Be2, when White probably has a small edge.

A2) 5...Nf6

A21) 6.Bg5 h6 (6...Qe7 is riskier, e.g. 7.Nf3 Qxe4+ 8.Be2 Bxc3+ 9.bxc3 with compensation) 7.Bxf6 Qxf6 8.Nf3 0-0 with ...Re8 to follow, when White will try to use the central pawn mass while Black will try to undermine it.  I doubt White can claim much, if any, advantage here though.
A22) 6.f3 d5 7.e5 Nd7 = is not what White wants as the pawn is inconveniently placed on f3.

B) 4...d5

B1) 5.e5 will transpose to line A11 following ...Bb4+ and Nc3,
B2) 5.exd5 Qxd5 transposes directly to 3...d5 4.exd5 Qxd5 5.cxd4 Nc6, thus improving on line A12.

However, it's also clear that after 3...Nc6 4.cxd4 Black has no way to force White into Capablanca's line as White can always push e4-e5, or exchange on d5 and play Be3 and/or a3 before Nf3.

1) Yes: 5.Bc4 Bb4 6.Ne2.
2) No: 6.Nge2 d6 or 6.f4 Bb4 or 6.Qb3 Qe7.

Of course there are a few more reasons to prefer 2.d4 to 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4.

1 e4 e5 2 d4 exd4 3 c3 dxc3 4 Nxc3 Nc6 now does White have anything better than just transposing to the Goring Gambit with 5 Nf3?

1 e4 e5 2 d4 exd4 3 c3 dxc3 4 Bc4 cxb2 5 Bxb2 Nc6 now does White have anything better than just transposing the game to the Goring Gambit with 6 Nf3?
