I agree but I like the 'new' 6.-b6 7.Bg5 d5 even more. Black's play is quite intuitive which is a good thing. Not the least it is easy to remember!!

Furher on 6.- b5 is a good attempt too, I have played it many times and its fully sound.

I always preferred Black after the main line: 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Bb4 4. Qc2 d5 5. a3 Bxc3 6. Qxc3 Ne4 7. Qc2 c5 8. dxc5 Nc6 9. cxd5 exd5

As far as I know Black is doing very well in the PCA variation: 5. cxd5 exd5 6. Bg5 c5! 7. dxc5 h6

What do people play versus this?  I do like Nimzo positions, but tend to be happier playing verus the bishop pair when white has structural weaknesses.  Hence, 4...00 doesn't always make me feel totally comfortable, especially in those endgame ish positions which GMs tend to play.  So, what do people think about 4...c5 or 4...d5.  I do subscribe to chess pub and so know the current theoretical status, but want to hear from people who play the lines to see what they think is most in keeping with the Nimzo.

The Classical Nimzo-Indian is not as popular as it once was at 2700+ level due to the 4...0-0 5.a3 Bc3 6.Qc3 d5 variation, where White has a broad choice on move 7, but Black fully equalises in all lines.

You can also reach this variation via. a 4...d5 move order with 5.a3 Bc3 6.Qc3 0-0, but you also have to be prepared for 5.cd5, when 5...ed5 6.Bg5 h6 7.Bh4 c5 is the PCA Variation, a line which is quite sharp and theoretical, but where Black is completely fine. You can also play 5...Qd5, but after 6.Nf3 Qf5 7.Qf5 ef5 8.a3 I prefer White.

In the 0-0 line those b6+Ba6 lines tend to be rather thematic for the Nimzo in terms of playing against c4 even if there are no doubled white c-pawns. There are also those lines with Ne4+f5+d6+e5, which are also not bad and quite thematic (if not necessarily for the Nimzo) positional lines.

c5 is a matter of taste. Objectively it may not be quite as good as d5 or 0-0 (but really it is at most a tiny bit worse), but if one likes the positions that should not stop one from playing it.

d5 is of course not very Nimzoesque, but of course objectively pretty good if one likes dynamic play.

I agree on d5 and 0-0 as being best, but I occasionally mix in the Zurich (nc6).

I don't trust 4...c5, having dabbled in it.

4...0-0 is most in keeping with the "Nimzo spirit".

4...d5 fits chess principles most (rapid development against slow opponent moves).

When seeking the full point I use 4...d5, from a theoretical perspective I prefer 4...0-0. Both are in my repertoire.
