thx for your comments, I´ll go for the exchange + Ne2;

This form of the Exchange can't arise, of course, from 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 e6 5.Bg5 Nbd7.  Maybe you have something different in mind against the Meran.

Check the game Kramnik-Bruzon from the Turine Olympiad. It is a model game showing how white should play against the Cambridge Springs, and possibly the reason why this variation is not played anymore in the highest levels.

Agreed, this was an important game but theory moves on. The current main line of the Cambridge Springs is 1. d4 d5 2. c4 c6 3. Nf3 Nf6 4. Nc3 e6 5. Bg5 Nbd7 6. e3 Qa5 7. cxd5 Nxd5 8. Qd2 Bb4 9. Rc1 h6 10. Bh4 c5 11. a3 Bxc3 12. bxc3 b6 13. c4 Qxd2+ 14. Nxd2 Ne7 as given by Papageno.

The play is rather reminiscent of the Nimzo with 4 Qc2 0-0 5 a3 Bxc3+ 6 Qxc3 b6. White has the bishop pair but Black's structure is a bit better. White's main trump is the unopposed dark-squared bishop.

As you would expect, White is usually the one pressing, but the Spaniards seem to have faith in Black's resources and the ultra-solid Malakhov has also played it.

IMHO at amateur level the QGA Exchange variation remains the most practical choice for White.

My next opponent plays cambridge springs; nowadays it´s played quite seldom, so I´m not familiar with the current theory, for example NCO evaluates this line between "=" and unclear.
--> any hints or games?

1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Bg5 Nbd7 5. e3
c6 6. Nf3 Qa5

6.cxd5 is simplest, transposing to an Exchange Variation where you can still put your King's Knight on e2.

I think Shirov had three interesting games with Black in the Cambridge Springs in the last 4 weeks. They probably show what top grandmasters regard as the main line.

Hint: All these games started
1. d4 d5 2. c4 c6 3. Nf3 Nf6 4. Nc3 e6 5. Bg5 Nbd7 6. e3 Qa5 7. cxd5 Nxd5 8. Qd2 Bb4 9. Rc1 h6 10. Bh4 c5 11. a3 Bxc3 12. bxc3 b6 13. c4 Qxd2+ 14. Nxd2 Ne7

Of course with this move order the Exchange is attractive: 5.cxd5 exd5 followed by some aggressive setup as Black already has played ...Nbd7.
Or you may try to trick your opponent with 4.Nf3 and after Nbd7 (hoping for 5.Bg5) 5.cxd5 exd5 6.Bf4, which probably is even a better version of the Exchange.
The Cambridge Springs is quite unpopular lately on the highest level. There is a game Del Rio de Angelis-Malakhatko won by White; Gozzoli-Flear was drawn though. Both are from 2010 and saw White playing 7.cxd5 Nxd5 8.Qd2. A year before though Nakamura as Black won after Bb4 9.Rc1 e5.
As little as I know there is no consensus what White's most promising line is.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

Wink
Okay,...but i don´t have this book and for a single game I won´t buy it. What´s his recommendation against this line, the rest i can work out alone.
