No longer play Reti, but if I remember well this reversed (pseudo-) Benko gambit is the way to go...

Hello,

I've only had a few games with White in the ...d4-Reti (& rarely enjoyed them; generally this variation feels painful for White).  I have not seen ...Nc6 combined with ...g6 either -- maybe because they both support ...e5 & are therefore somewhat redundant early on.

Your opponent's 6...h6 doesn't seem especially relevant either (why not just 6...e5?).  I don't see the point of that move, aside from just trying to get you to make a commital move like 7.Na3.  Bg5 isn't much of a threat, although maybe the idea is to restrict squares available to the knight on f3.

Regardless, does it make sense to try 7.Qa4, intending 8.b4?  Seems like you have a little bit of activity & your opponent has some developmental catch-up to do.

I also like your 7.e3!? idea as well, although your worries about d3 seem valid.

Hello all,

been lurking over the forums for quite a while, first post now.

I've been delving into the Reti lately and like the positions that I get. This weekend I played a tournament and after winning the first round, I had to play a GM the second round with white. The game went as follows.

1.Nf3 d5 2.c4 d4 3.g3 g6 4.Bg2 Bg7 5.0-0 Nc6 6.d3 h6 7.Na3 e5 8.Rb1 a5 9.Nc2 Nf6 10.a3 Nf6 and after 11.b4 ab4: 12.ab4: e4 Black had a definite advantage.

After the game, which I lost, I checked for better continuations, as I didn't know this g6 variation with Nc6 thrown in. Came up with the following:

* 1.Nf3 d5 2.c4 d4 3.g3 g6 4.Bg2 Bg7 5.0-0 Nc6 6.d3 h6 7.Na3 e5 (as in the game above) 8.b4!? Nb4: 9.Ne5: Be5: 10.Qa4+ Nc6 11.Bc6:+ bc6: 12.Qc6:+ Bd7 13.Qe4 f6 14.f4 Bf5 15.Qc6+ is a forced draw. (unfortunately)

* 1.Nf3 d5 2.c4 d4 3.g3 g6 4.Bg2 Bg7 5.0-0 Nc6 6.d3 h6 7.e3!? (I think after de3: my d3 pawn is doomed here as it can never advance to d4, but maybe I can stop worry about it and sac it, attack b7 at some stage and rely on piece play?

* 1.Nf3 d5 2.c4 d4 3.g3 g6 4.b4!? is perhaps interesting.

Any other thoughts or ideas on this variation would be most welcome.. Smiley
