I wonder whether 'From London to Elista' by Bareev and Levitov sheds any light on this point.

I own that unusual and excellent book. Sadly, Bareev was not involved in Kramnik-Topalov 2006, and Bareev provides no inside info that he might have received by later talking with Kramnik or Hensel. Indeed this last 1/3 of the book is nothing special.

The first 2/3 of the book, on Kasparov-Kramnik 2000 and Kramnik-Leko 2004, are fantastic.

REVIEWS OF CHESS BOOKS

I judge/rate each chess book not just on its quality in isolation, but by how much new it brings to the whole body of chess literature.

Next year someone will release yet another fine chess book for kids or beginners, and someone will give it a good review; yet the book will be 98% redundant to a stack of similar books published during the past decade or two. And more books will be published on the Sicilian Defense.
It has reached the point where reviewing a chess book in isolation is useless or misleading. When a chess book is reviewed, it should be in comparison to earlier books on the similar subjects. But reviewers seem to not share my opinion on that.

Only a small percentage of new chess books bring as much unusual content of such high quality, as does the Bareev book.

TO: GMTonyK:  I fixed the spelling, to Carsten Hensel. Thanks.  Embarrassed

Kramnik's then manager Carsten Hansen

Carsten Hansen, the former ChessPublishing writer? Undecided I think it was another Carsten - Carsten Hensel maybe?!

In 2006, when Vladimir Kramnik arrived at the playing hall for match game 5 against Veselin Topalov, Kramnik would have done well to remember his own comment after Kramnik won the WCChamp title from Garry Kasparov in 2000.
Instead, Pottygate nearly cost Kramnik his title.

"Part of my preparation for the World Champion match against Kasparov was to be ready for his off-board tactics. I did not to react to them at all. Once you start thinking about these things during the game, even analysing them, you’re caught."
-- V.Kramnik

I can understand how Kramnik was really thrown by this Danailov-Topalov ploy. On the previous day, Kramnik's then manager Carsten Hansen decided to withhold the looming bathroom-restriction change info from Kramnik. Kramnik was not told until the next day, hours before the game was to start.
On the previous day, Hansen should have reminded Kramnik of Kramnik's year 2000 philosophy, and then revealed the new restriction on the bathroom.

Or you could do what Ivanchuk does: Don't follow the politics, let the pieces do the talking!  Grin

I wonder whether 'From London to Elista' by Bareev and Levitov sheds any light on this point.

All our dreams come true if we have the courage to pursue them.
