I realized that after 28.Be6 Ng3 29.Rh2 Be1 30.c3 Kf8 31.Bxf7 Kxf7 32.Kc2 Ke6 White can also play 33.Kd3 and eventually win a pawn. The resulting rook+3 pawns vs. bishop+knight+pawn ending looks rather unpleasant for Black.

Maybe it's a waste of time to analyze this line. We better concentrate on the Burnett variation, where it is up to White to find an improvement.

Hi!

I've found an interesting defensive idea after

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 g6
5. Nc3 Bg7 6.Be3 Nf6 7. Bc4 O-O 8. Bb3 d6
9. f3 Bd7 10. Qd2 Rc8 11. O-O-O Ne5 12. Kb1 a6 13. h4  h5 14.g4 hxg4 15.g5 Nxh5 16.Rdg1 Qa5
17.Bh6 Bf6 18.fxg4 Bxg4 19.Bf4 e6
.
Now White has little choice but to go for the line suggested by all engines and mentioned in Khalifman's book Anand 11:
20.Bxe5 Qxe5 21.Rxg4 Qxd4 22.Qh6 Bg7
23.Rxg6 fxg6 24.Bxe6 Rf7 25.Qxg6 Qf6
26.Qxf6 Bxf6 27.Bxc8
, where Khalifman stops and gives White a large advantage.
Now things become interesting after 27...Bxc3. If White plays the tempting 28.Be6, he will discover that after 28...Ng3 29.Rh2 Be1 he may eventually win the bishop against two pawns, but not the game. A sample line runs 30.c3 Kf8 31.Bxf7 Kxf7 32.Kc2 Ke6 33.Kd1 Bxc3 34.bxc3 Nxe4 35.Kc2 Kd5 36.Rh7 Kc6. This position seems to be an easy draw for Black, who just moves his knight around the c5 square. The only realistic winning attempt for White is to bring his king to e7. But once the White king goes to the kingside, Black will start attacking pawns.

Unfortunately, White has an obvious alternative in 28.bxc3, which gives him chances to win the game. However Black has good defensive resources in this position. For example he can attack the e-pawn and hope to reach a theoretically drawn rook ending with a- and c-pawn (usually with Black's d-pawn remaining on the board, but clearly this doesn't hurt Black). I think Black should start with 28...Ng7 29.Kb2 Rc7 30.Bg4 and then to start attacking the e-pawn.

What do you think about it? I admit, it's not a very practical way of playing, unless we can analyse this out to a clear draw.
