Thx, TN. I was familiar with that game. I just wasn't aware of any serious analysis of it. It does seem that White generally ignores Black's noise and transposes into main lines.

4.dc5 Ne4 5.cd6 Nc6! fully equalises for Black, based on the high-level encounter Anand-Ivanchuk, Linares 1998.

I don't know about a name, but it is a transposition used frequently by many Sicilian players. One idea may be to induce Nc3 and thus avoid a Hungarian Variation (Qxd4) where there are some lines that White can set up a Maroczy bind.

It also avoids a transposition to the Smith-Morra: 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. c3 and White puts Black out of the usual track (though in my opinion 4. ... Nf6 now is no problem for Black).

After 3. ... Nf6 there is also an independent line to learn after 4. dxc5 Nxe4.

These are the main differences I am aware of, but there could be some other points behind the move-order.

Hi,

I don't know the name of this opening, and it seems to transpose to normal Open Sicilians most of the time. But Ivanchuk has played it and recently Vachier-Lagrave used this move order.

A) Does the opening have a name

and
B) What is its theoretical standing?
