I don't have any board or books here at work, but I think this set-up is mentioned also in both Wojo's Weapon 1 and Raetsky  and Chetverik' The Catalan.

IIRC, the idea in Wojo's Weapon is to allow Black to play ...e5, in order to take on both e5 and d5 and saddle him/her with an isolated pawn.

hi all,

today I played the catalan against a rare setup, which seems to have good chances to equalize. I wonder, why Black´s setup is used so seldom.

Here are the moves:

1. d4 d5 2. Nf3 e6 3. c4 c6 4. Qc2 Nf6 5. g3
Bd6 6. Bg2 Nbd7 7. Nbd2 O-O 8. O-O Qe7 9. e4
9... dxe4 11 10. Nxe4 (10. Ng5 e5) 10... Nxe4 11. Qxe4 h6  (11... e5!? 12. Re1 f5 13. Qc2)

Instead of ...h6 the move 11. ...e5!? seems quite promising for white.

I checked the database and found a game by a quite promising young player:
