I've just stopped new registrations again as the server hosts shut down the Forum because of too much activity - as far as I can see there was nothing out-of-the-ordinary, but just more visitors (probably due to the World Champ match). Roll Eyes
I may have to look for another host if this happens again, but in the meantime anyone can email ChessPublishing support if they want an account.

I've just stopped new member registration for a while as it was becoming too much work sifting through all the applications. Angry I'm only going to accept new members who are also subscribers for a while, just email support with your chesspublishing details and preferred Forum username.

I will have a look next week to the forum code in order to fix the problem as easy as possible (with a basic code).

I will inform you of the advances by MP.

I can spend 15 minutes in order to code it, if you need it.

I am loathe to make too many changes to the coding of the Forum software, but if you are really expert on the YaBB coding then please go ahead. Smiley

Let say you put an image of one main opening structure.

May be Sicilian Defense. (1.e4 c5)

And the subscriber should select the correct name in one list of 4 or 5 diferent options.

If they select the correct one, the subscription should be automatic, with a little coding.

I can spend 15 minutes in order to code it, if you need it.

What about to put a simple opening position in order to name it.

Actually, the problem is not the bots being able to sneak through the controls, the problem is that there are so many requests every day. As soon as I see the user-names I can delete them, I don't even have to bother seeing what they've written.
If there is any doubt then I look at their reason for registering, which is just a string of random characters nine times out of ten! Roll Eyes
I could ask the potential subscribers to name a position, say, but then I would have to look at the answer anyway, unless it was somehow automated, but then we are talking serious coding.

Is there no way to filter away the ones giving the wrong answer or automatically register those who provide the right answer?

The benefit of using a chess problem is that it narrows the right answer to e.g. "f7" or "f6-f7" - provided you give "1." in the reply box and make sure the solution is a pawn move, there's hardly any other way to express the solution.

Something generic like Queen Gambit or Spanish Game.

Well, that's a good idea! ChessPub is known for its openings research after all.

Hmm, I already have an enormous library of tactics on my improveyourchess.com site, but I'm not sure all the subscribers would be capable of solving many of the tactics! Roll Eyes

Just one test position would probably suffice...

Maybe it's possible to take low rated problems from chesstempo.com (950 - 1200) and exchange links. Both are chess sites for people wanting to improve. Both cover a different topic. So there should be a chance of synergy.

This seems to be a real problem for all Forums these days, the bots have software that works out what the captcha is, I've made it stronger but it probably won't have any effect on the machines ... but will annoy genuine users! Roll Eyes

For the highly paranoid, best would be if the diagram is a single .gif or .png file, since it would then be very hard for software to figure out the chess position.

Hmm.  I'm building a website of my own, and I may use this idea.
