There are almost 50-60 chess apps on ipad app store . for playing online also there are some out there. last night I downloaded a free app called "ichess pro " that have FIcs and Icc client. 
"chess for ICC HD" is another choice.
"chessbase online " is what you need .
also" Chess.com " have a good app that you can play online or vs computer ( in 10 levels ). it has a daily tactic training feature too , rating your tactic ability continuouesly. 
There is an app called "chess-wise" that have a huge online database and can search online for the latest games and tournements , downloading them instantly and replay each game for you. 
About the chessbase and Dvd issue '  i'm not sure  completely but i met an application adopted for chessbase too.There exists a "chessbase lite" application also . An app called "Wyse " can connect you remotely to your windows pc and all your chessbase database and engines.
"Tchess pro"  and " shredder chess" also have strong and fascinating features . Stockfish has a useful feature called "remote engine " which you can connect to your home Pc or database online and utilize them on an "ipad-2" format properly. 

Another possibility with an ipad for chess- lovers is "ibooks" , which you can purchase some good chess books via it and study them or chess PDfs easily when and where ever you are.

After some while , finally the magic tablet has been released and since I'm a chess- nut  , instantly after unboxing I checked out some chess applications on it. As you know this new tablet has been armed with a breakthrough strong dual core A5 chip , so it can reach to 19-20 plies in  analysing a normal middle game position at only 50 seconds which may be a new mile stone in such ultraportable and handy devices .
I tested stockfish (last Version: Stockfish for iOS 2.4, 2011-03-20) on it and it was amazingly fast and fluid with an elo estimate near 2950 !  almost equal to Fritz 12 on an average dual core PC. A good start ! let's see what have the old  Shredder to say ?!
