My preference is for THE e+ chess app.

@andres I appreciate that you check out this forum. But don't take the criticism too hard.
Your product has good sides, one of them is that you can play through your own moves when going through a variation.

One gripe with smartchess is that when you play through some moves the annotation  disappears. This makes the game hard to follow.
Another point which can be better is that you have to go through a lot of pages when going through a game. Combined with the point above is that you miss the big picture of the game.

What I personally would like to see is an app which is a mix between your smartchessapp and the everymanchessviewer. The everymanchessviewer has as a pro that you can see the entire game with annotations.
The e+app also has this possibility of seeing the whole game or text.
You cannot go through a variation if you want, but I don't find that too bothersome.

The ipad chess apps out there are still not perfect.
I would just like to see an app which
1.can read pgn with annotations and variations.
2. Allows you to add variations and annotations and save this in a file on your ipad.

If these two can be implemented in an app I think you will have a simple winner.

Slates, you can flip the board in the e-chess app.  It's one of the buttons under the board. Wink

Hi Andres,
I understand that you are defensive of your product, but I can't revise my opinion for that reason alone.
The e+chess app is simply far better in my own opinion - yes, you can enter 'what if' moves, but no, you can't flip the board, something I'd like to see, for sure.
I simply prefer the way it handles variations, which is similar to the Everyman app - both of these apps work for me, but as I said before, I do hope your app does well and is a success, but personally I much prefer these others and will pay their prices for the functionality they offer me.
Kind regards,
Slates

Late for work, so just time for a quick couple of mentions, prompted by your post  - the Chess Tiger app is pretty good for entering variations, as well as being a lot of fun to play as an engine in its own right and although expensive and iPhone native right now is apparently due out in universal iPad enhanced form shortly.....
Also, I found an app called e+chess recently which is superb for playing through chess books on the iPad, it's vastly superior, in my opinion, to Smartchess, which failed to live up to its promise.
It comes with Capablanca book free and has options to buy other titles, first one I got was Beim's strategy book, I believe Silman's endgame and Reassess 4 are on their way to the app too.

Hi Slates,

If an app with a small and unresponsive (dead) board because it cannot accept what-if moves is described as "vastly superior" to SmartChess as a matter of opinion, then I think it is an opinion that will not worry me a bit.

I am sure every app to its credit provides for some utility and meets the needs of content consumers but to call it vastly superior (based on what is not clear), is quite a stretch.

If I remember it right, you were looking for a Flip board option in an App, were you not?

Chess Fundamentals is free but the other titles are a bit pricey, don't you think?

It has good graphics for sure.

And if you enjoy reading through a maze of variations and nested lines in variations while having to sift through embedded prose then it is the perfect app for you.

Andres

Yeah e+ is a nice app.  Chess tiger from my side not so good,  but if a new iPad version is coming that might be quite cool

Chess partner has just been released.

The good news is that it addresses one of my key 'wants' - that being the ability to see the board, notation, engine and make variations.

Still some room for improvement- I haven't found a way to promote variations, you don't seem to be able to enter text or assesments, and you seem to only be able to import Pgn files through iTunes (as a result I haven't been able to test playing with an annotated game).

Anyway for the price definitely worth a look, and a significant step forward.

Does anyoneknow if Hiarcs supports adding variations yourself and saving that? I have just got my new iPad and as of yet i am not overly impressed by the chess apps available.

The one on my android phone worked better (scid and stockfish. Stockfish on android actually allowes you to enter variations. The stockfish on the iPad does not Sad )

So there is no way to consume cbh files on the iPad at the moment?

Maybe it's just economics; more demand for Pocket Fritz as it's more difficult to smuggle your iPad into the toilet surreptitiously  Smiley

I can understand what fling says. it's so frustrating .since I have both ( Ipad 2 and Pocket fritz 4) , I can relate. I have tons of Cbv and Cbh files on my thin Pocket pc always in my shirt pocket , and Pf4 can handle them extremely well ! Suppose you are in a waiting room or something like that and then suddenly you find that what a tactical blunder or strategical flaw  Capablanca has made in 19?? game vs another world champion ! that 's great . a critical moment or even a new Novelty in the games of new  millenium players ! ....and just by a thin and 4.5" Pocket Pc which is always in your pocket ! thank to technology....

in the Recent famouse game : Grischuk vs  Polgar , and examining the post mortem analysis by GM Gravias , I could see that my thin PPC can find out almost all of the related
Novelties ! it's a great feeling....  Cool

Meanwhile  When I'm analysing my own games for i. e rapid online games , I can't pin point my blind spots and complete evaluation of my thought process  via relying on Ipad ( while I have plenty of good chess apps on it ) Sad....so I need to go back to that little handy device !

yes , I can relate.

Hiarcs for ipad is now out and I suggest that any ipad owner immediately invests in it.
What with that and the ICC app, which is vastly more useable than it was on the iphone, naturally, the ipad is my favourite place for chess now.

But again, it doesn't read CBH-files or Chessbase videos, right?
If so, my laptop will remain my favourite place for chess.

I just want an app which can compete with Pocket Fritz which i used to use on my old HP iPAQ 10 years ago.

- Ability to read PGN which includes commentary and variations
- Ability to enter in new variations & save
- An engine
- Ability to see the board and the notation at the same time

It would be nice if the capability of pocket fritz to show chessbase video files could also be used.

I agree, this is pretty much what I would need as well, BUT:

It is hard to convert CBH-files to PGN entirely, that is why e.g. Everyman produces both files.

If you could show CB-videos, you probably could show CBH-files as well, right?

I still can't believe Chessbase doesn't spend any resources on this.

people are willing to pay extra money for iPads compared to normal tablets, but people are unwilling to pay a single dime for chess software, therefore noone really puts effort in developing good chess software ...
which results in no good chess software being available ... the only thing you can do is to hope for an idealist out there who does this job for free ...
