starting out caro kann by joe gallagher is still pretty good for these purposes; agree that Wells' book though admirable is probably less useful for these purposes

Agreed, but based on the wording of the OP I wonder if a more general book such as 'Chess Opening Essentials' by Komarov or 'Fundamental Chess Openings' by Van der Sterren would be more appropriate.
