Actually I think (at work = have no board) that a version of Morra Gambit declined (with d3) can be reached where white does not play the standard move c3-c4 but still I think the title of the thread is missleding.

In the main line of the Sicilian Defense it would appear that White can achieve an effortless plus if Black closes the position and a huge attack if he transposes to a Smith-Morra Gambit.

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Bd3 Nc6 6.c3!! White anchors the Knight, prepares to castle, and, if Black plays d6, White plays the maneuver Nc2/Ne3 with a bind on the position. White has great squares for the Queen on the Queenside. Fritz 10 decides to complicate.

6...d5!? (Of course Black can play Nxd4 but after cxd4 White has a great center) 7.exd5 Qxd5 (They tell you in chess 101 to avoid early Queen moves but there is nothing better) 8.O-O Nxd4 9.cxd4 Bd7 (So that Qxd4 doesn't hang the Queen) 10.Nc3 Qxd4 11.Nb5 +/-

Can anyone find equality for Black after 6.c3?

6. ...d6 =

It's just a regular Scheveningen setup, except White has played a useless c3 blocking the natural Nc3. If White wants to control b4, he should just play a3.

I think sloughterchess should stick to his specialty: refuting the two knight's defence.  Wink

As White already has played 4.Nxd4
a) 6...dxc3 is illegal and
b) Sloughter's line has nothing to do with the Morra Gambit.

Sorry, my mistake. I was sloppy. Thought this was the usual bad try, because of the Subject!

To me the question is, can White avoid to lose after best play by Black following 6 ...dxc3? This is a Smith-Morra with the bishop on d3. In the "proper" it is much better placed on c4, because it attacks d5, e6 and f7 and it doesn't hinder White on the d-file.
