I am curious as to Sakaev's response to the queen trade line 5. Qe2 Qe7 6. d3. I assume it is impossible to avoid drawish positions, but Black can still try to play for a win anyway, i.e. Exchange French.

Sakaev gives two responses: 16. ... Be4 & 16. ... h6. Kramnik (the gold standard of Petroff) has reached the diagram 4 times with Black. In the 3 classical games he played 16. ... Be4 and only in a blindfold game he has gone for 16. ... h6.

And your point is?

My wording is bad. I meant it as a compliment. Not that many repertoire books give 2 options like that.

I am sure if Kramnik plays 16...Be4, it would not quickly lead to a bad position, since after 17. c4 then ...Qf5 18. Bg3/Be3 Red8 and White's centre looks quite vulnerable and overextended.

I dunno what his point was, but after 16...Be4, isn't 17.c4 somewhat promising for White?

Chess Stars seem to have a new Petroff Defence repertoire book to be released on 10.09.11:

It looks interesting; I have not seen a repertoire book for the Petroff Defence yet. The Table of Contents looks massive Smiley

The table of contents is useless. Chapters 24, 25, 26 & 27 are very hard to distinguish. If they Left Chapters 16 - 21 plus 28 & 29 in part 4 and made a part 5:

Part 5.  Petroff Defence 3.Nxe5; Main Line: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nxe5 d6 4.Nf3 Nxe4 5.d4 d56.Bd3 Nc6 7.0-0 Be7 8.c4 Nb4

it would have done wonders for readability.
