OK, I've added 'Previous Update' buttons to the last year's updates (well actually 13 months!) I can add more if there is sufficient demand. Smiley

If time needs to be invested I would prefer to see it in the chess content. Why not make a monthly personal video - "GM Kosten presents the best game of the month on Chesspublishing"  Wink

Of course if there is a lot of work for Tony it makes little sense I guess.

What if I add them for the previous 1 year's updates, say? That wouldn't be too much work, but is it enough?

Speaking only for myself, the answer is yes, that'd probably be enough. Though this isn't a feature I'd use all the time, there have been occasions when I've found myself trawling back through previous updates looking for something I know I've seen, though I can't remember exactly when. This feature would streamline the process. As someone has pointed out above, of course there are other ways of reaching previous months' updates, but I feel this feature makes the site more user-friendly in general – and therefore, arguably, worth Tony's while investing time in.

It is better than now Smiley I still feel I would use the feature. I used it at two different sections this week.

Honestly I dont need it - I dont want Tony to work day and night for something I can easily change myself:

http://www.chesspublishing.com/content/8/oct11.htm?user=username
October 2011

now for September 2011
http://www.chesspublishing.com/content/8/sep11.htm?user=username

or for May 2008
http://www.chesspublishing.com/content/8/may08.htm?user=username

and so on... just change the month and year in the browser line - simple!

Another reason for adding the browsing different updates  Wink

Of course if there is a lot of work for Tony it makes little sense I guess. But even simpler would be to be able to browse everything in a CBH-file on a tablet... I have to wait until Win 8 tablets are out  Sad

Btw, the idea came from browsing different issues of journals, e.g.

http://www.annualreviews.org/doi/abs/10.1146/annurev-pathol-011811-132458
http://www.jbc.org/content/286/46.toc
http://glycob.oxfordjournals.org/content/current

They used to have the links in a larger size, IIRC. Some have a large arrow and small text, but I didn't find an example right now.

I have been using them so far, but nobody else maybe? I missed such a link in the 1 ...e4 section yesterday. I still find it a bit annoying to go through older updates by opening each one in a new tab.

Is nobody interested in these 'Previous update' links? I don't want to put thousands of them online and then see hundreds of complaints about them being in the wrong place!! Roll Eyes

Great! I think it is good this way. The links don't take up much space, which makes the difference in looks really minor (which is a good thing).

OK, I've put one at the top and one at the bottom of the current 1 e4 e5 update as a test.

But unfortunately, it seems like most subscribers don't read this thread Sad

I suppose subscribers are likely to flick through the update before wanting to see the previous update, so the link is towards the bottom of the page (see this month's Open Sicilians for an example), but maybe I'm wrong? Undecided

Yes, too bad there seems to be little interest in this. Anyway, I like it and will for sure use it if available.

This thread seems to have gone cold ... just when I was hoping for a little inspiration! Sad
I've put a 'Previous Month' link at the bottom of this month's Open Sicilians update as a trial - any criticism would be welcome! Smiley

This is why I asked if you could do it, otherwise I would probably have said something like - you should add a button etc. Smiley

Any thoughts on the best place for a 'Previous month' button, top or bottom?

I'd suggest at the top, next to – or at least close to – the line of text identifying the month of the current update.

I am not sure, but probably at the bottom. If possible, one at the bottom and one just next to the link - To download the October '11 1 X ... games directly in PGN form, click here: - maybe?

I think it's a great idea. Even if not many people go through old updates yet, their number might increase considerably after that "novelty"!

What do people mean when they say "Chess is the pawn of the soul"?

Hmm, actually that's not a bad idea! Does anyone else feel this could be useful?

I think it's a great idea! Trawling back through previous updates is currently quite a laborious process. Implementing this suggestion would make things a lot easier.

Browsing of previous updates

I just realized that I miss a feature in the guides sections. Is it possible, in addition of having the links to the old updates, to add a browser function. I mean, can you add an arrow that you could click on to get to the last previous update? This would make it quicker to go through old updates, instead of clicking each link on the "previous update"-page . But maybe it is not too common for people to do this?
