True, Markovich. Embarrassed Unfortunately, when I find something absurd and laugh publicly it often turns out that person was serious. So usually, I just answer it straight.

Perhaps we could have the NIC codes too.

There isn't room for both.

I find it useful to have the ECO codes as they can sometimes be useful. Not essential though.

The ECO codes are sometimes a help here in finding topics.

I don't blame you for making a mistake, I just think those codes are annoying.  Apparently my opinion is unusual, though, so I'll say no more.

If you're going to use ECO codes, I suggest that you use exactly one and put the most specific one that seems to encompass the entire subject of the OP.  For example if the subject is 4.Ng5 in general or the Traxler, Ulvestad or Fritz, use C57.  If the subject is 5...Na5 in general or 5...Na5 6.Bb5+ Bd7, or 5...Na5 6.Bb5+ c6 7.dxc6 bxc6 8.Qf3 or 8.Bd3, use C58.  If the subject is 5...Na5 6.Bb5+ c6 7.dxc6 bxc6 8.Be2, use C59.  If the subject is 4.d4 use C56, and if the subject is the Two Knights in general or 4.d3, use C55.

Ok. Thanks for letting me know!

If I make any other mistakes in translating these arcane opening names into ECO Code, please send me a personal message and I'll fix it as soon as possible.

I honestly couldn't tell you. C57-C59 covers the lines:

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Ng5.

Is that the Traxler?

No. The Traxler is 4...Bc5, which is C57 only.

The Traxler has C57, C58 and C59 devoted to it??  That's what it says in the Traxler thread headers.

I have actually found it to be useful. In the example Markovich cites, I did find the thread on the Traxler by hunting down the ECO code. I didn't know the English descriptive name of the opening for sure, but I did know the ECO code because I saw a game listed in my database as C57.

I don't know, I suppose I'm quibbling. For searches, I would think that exactly one ECO code would be the way to go. Hyphenated reanges don't cut it, since the middle values don't show up.

In any case, I myself don't really have the time to do this.

Yes, I think it was in the thread about the way forward for the Forum, and there were complaints about the search facility. It was just added to make it easier to search for a particular opening (with more modern Forum software it would have been added as a tag).
Maybe it is useless now that Jesse altered the search button so it uses Google instead?!

Does anyone besides me find these useless and fundamentally distracting? What, should I keep ECO's five massive volumes on my lap while I browse this site? Should I really care what the ECO code for the Traxler is? I salute the good will of those applying themselves to this, but if my preference is in any way typical, this particular work is worse than wasted.

I haven't added the ECO codes in the forums I moderate, but this is due to laziness rather than any issues with the concept.

This was done at the behest of Tony.

Now, people can search for threads using ECO codes!
