In the Modern the pawn structures typical for the KID (e4/d5 vs. e5/d6) rarely occur and the centre is usually fluid or sometimes half open.

Being a KID-player myself I have played some games with Tiger´s Modern in the past  where Black goers for an early a6, b5 and c5. Often the positions are more like a Dragon Sicilian or sometimes a Benoni if White answers c5 with d5.

The description by your friend may fit for the Pirc where the early development of the kings knight means Black has to be more careful with flank play because e4-e5 by White comes with tempo and may disturb Blacks plans.

I think the Modern requires aggressive play; being an opening with a flank strategy and little central control, one cannot play slowly. Moves have to be played purposefully with the aim of attacking the centre.

The Modern is just like any other opening - you can play it aggressively or you can play it passively. But it's also different to other openings, in that you are taking more risks by developing from the sides before counterattacking in the centre. If the central counterattack works then you blow up the opponent's centre and take the initiative, but if it doesn't you will get crushed by the opponent's extra space. Such is the life of a Modern/Rat player.

I haven't played modern by myself but it often comes similar in pawn structures with KID which I play. We know KID is an aggressive system for black. Is Modern also the same. A friend of mine was saying in most of the main lines black is fighting to offset a slight advantage for white and dthese lines doesn't give winning chances any close to KID. Any thoughts?
